The lessons of 9/11: what we learned about caring for ... - Health Blog

We lost nearly 3,000, with many more wounded and traumatized by the tragic events of 9/11. Their stories have taught us much about honor, about bravery, about love, about pain and loss and how to endure. And they are still teaching us. In 9/11?s Lessons of Healing, I talk about how experts like Dr. Carol North, a psychiatrist and director of the program in trauma and disaster at the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas and professor of psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center, have used the experiences gleaned from the survivors and those who remember to help others.

Unfortunately, traumatic events continue with many making the headlines: the shooting at the theater in Colorado, the Sikh temple in Wisconsin, the Empire State Building in New York. Dr. North, Dr. Nancy Donachie, medical director of the Seay Behavioral Health Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Alina Suris, chief of psychology at the VA North Texas Health Care System and associate director of psychiatry at UTSW and Dr. John Naus, a psychiatrist in private practice on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris-Methodist Hospital Hurst -Euless-Bedford, share what they?ve learned about the differences between post traumatic stress syndrome and the distress that calls for what they call psychological first aid ? a distinction that can help many of us now, on this day, and in the years to come.
