We all know the health benefits of green tea. In fact, drinking 5 or more cups of it could reduce the risks of getting some kinds of cancer by up to 40% and stop the spread of breast cancer. Now scientists have discovered that a chemical extract found in green tea could be used to effectively treat two types of skin cancer, and maybe even prostate cancer and leukemia.
According to the National Cancer Institute, over 76,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the U.S every year, and around 9,200 die of it.
The extract, called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), isn?t strong enough in the drink to have any real benefit, but scientist have found that applying a concentrated version of the chemical to tumor cells in the laboratory reduced or shrunk two thirds of cancer cells within a month, without affecting healthy cells.
With increasing concerns about the adverse effects of chemotherapy on healthy cells, and even the possibility that in the long run unsuccessful chemotherapy treatment can make cancer worse, people are likely to turn more and more to alternative, natural cancer treatment.
The researchers who conducted the study believe it is the first of its kind that shows that green tea extract can actually kill cancer cells.
The Study
Researchers condensed the chemical extract from green tea into small vesicle cells, which move substances within a cell. The vesicle cells also contained transferrin, which is a plasma protein used to transport iron through the body and has been shown to naturally target and latch on to cancer cells.? The treatment was then applied to mole-forming melanoma and scale-forming epidermoid carcinoma.
The study found that 40% of tumors disappeared in both cases and 30% of carcinoma tumors and 20% of melanoma tumors shrank.? A further 10% of melanoma tumors were stabilized, which meant that the cancer stopped growing, but didn?t shrink either.
Using the experimental treatment, the tumors shrank every day, or even disappeared. It is believed that it is the method of application, via vesicle cells, that made the study such a success as when the EGCg was applied in other ways it had no effect on the tumor.
The results may pave the way for new cancer treatments and more medical professionals relying less on chemotherapy as the first method of cancer treatment and turning more to alternative therapies.
