LG Splendor (U.S. Cellular)

The LG Splendor ($79.99 direct) is a sleek touch-screen slab for U.S. Cellular, the nation's 7th largest carrier and its largest regional carrier. The problem is, even though the LG Splendor is a brand new Android?smartphone, there's little reason to buy it, thanks to the existence of several other better phones already in U.S. Cellular's lineup at or near the same price.

Design, Connectivity, and Call Quality
The LG Splendor measures 4.92 by 2.64 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and weighs a svelte 4.2 ounces. It's made entirely of hard black plastic, save for the glass screen. The back panel features a textured vertical line pattern. The 4.3-inch IPS 800-by-480-pixel capacitive touch screen looks bright and crisp, and is covered in Corning Gorilla glass. Strangely, there's no ambient light sensor, so all you get is a software brightness slider. Beneath the screen are two touch buttons and a hardware Home button, which is an unusual configuration for an Android phone, but one that shouldn't pose many problems.

The LG Splendor is a quad-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1700/1900/2100MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. U.S. Cellular runs its own 3G and 4G LTE networks in portions of 26 states, and won our Readers' Choice award this year for its reasonable prices and reliable network. The Splendor doesn't support 4G LTE, though.

Voice quality isn't great. The main culprit is a muffled tone in the earpiece that makes it tough to hear what the other person is saying in noisy environments, though it's fine if there's not a lot of background noise. Transmissions through the microphone are clear, though, and reception is solid. Calls sounded fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset. I could trigger voice dialing over Bluetooth, but it never understood me properly, despite repeated attempts. The speakerphone goes pretty loud, but it sounds horribly distorted at the top setting; you'll want to back off a notch or two if possible.?The 1,700mAh battery was good for a solid 7 hours and 35 minutes of talk time.

Hardware, OS, and Apps
There's a single-core 1GHz processor on board, but that's not as bad as it sounds. The LG Splendor runs Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," so it feels considerably snappier in day-to-day use than Android 2.3 "Gingerbread," which unfortunately is still appearing on new phones like the keyboarded Samsung Galaxy Metrix 4G, also on U.S. Cellular.?ICS is still one version behind the current Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean," though, and there's no word yet on a possible future upgrade.

Otherwise, this is a solid Android phone for running apps. There are five home screens you can swipe between and customize. LG modified the UI slightly, and includes an app drawer you can configure by tapping the gear icon in the upper right corner. You can also make little file folders of apps and drop them on home screens.LG Splendor (U.S. Cellular)

LG's Quickmemo app (pictured right) lets you snap screenshots, draw on them with your fingertip, and email them to colleagues or friends. And you shouldn't have any problem running most of the 600,000+ third-party apps available in Google Play, thanks to the Splendor's Android 4.0 OS and standard specs. Benchmark scores weren't bad for a budget Android phone, and indicate you can at least run some 3D games, albeit not at 30 frames per second.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's 2.08GB of free internal storage, plus a microSD card slot under the battery cover, which lacks a fingernail indent and is a pain to remove. LG throws in a 4GB card, and my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. There's also a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack along the top edge. Music tracks sound fine through Plantronics BackBeat Go ?Bluetooth earphones, and the phone has no trouble playing any of our audio test files. Standalone DivX, Xvid, MPEG, and H.264 videos play smoothly at sizes up to 720p, but my 1080p videos wouldn't play. Stereo Bluetooth audio was in sync, though.

The 5-megapixel autofocus camera has an LED flash and geotagging. The Splendor includes what is now becoming LG's trademark "Cheese" shutter, which lets you say the word to snap a photo without having to fiddle with the on-screen controls. Shutter and save speeds are quick, and photos look vibrant and detailed outdoors. Indoor shots had muted color but were still sharp. Recorded 720p and VGA videos play smoothly at 29 frames per second and exhibit bright, crisp color both indoors and out, and skew slightly warm in the spectrum. There's no 1080p recording or image stabilization. You do get a weak, front-facing VGA camera for video chats.

LG has its work cut out for it in selling the Splendor. LG's biggest problem on U.S. Cellular is competing against the $99.99 Motorola Electrify 2, which features a dual-core processor, a higher-resolution screen, and a better camera; that's easily worth spending the extra $20 for. There's also the older Samsung Galaxy S II, which also has a dual-core processor, plus a slightly larger 4.5-inch screen and a better camera, all for the same $79.99 as the LG Splendor.?My advice: Keep an eye on the retail pricing of these three phones. If the LG Splendor drops significantly, it'll be a solid buy, but for now the other two are better phones overall.

Finally, our favorite smartphone on U.S. Cellular remains the $199.99 Samsung Galaxy S III, which features a blistering 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, a 720p high-definition 4.8-inch screen, and a significantly better 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording and image stabilization.

Full-Service Restaurants in China Industry ... - Business - Networkusall

30. 09. 12

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2012

Full-service restaurants in China account for the largest share of revenue of all the industries in China's catering subsector. Chinese culture places fantastic importance on food; historically, eating in full-service restaurants has been considered a fantastic time to spend with friends and to delight in the wide variety of Chinese cuisine and flavors. But, Full-Service Restaurant industry's proportion of the total catering subsector has been slightly decreasing in recent years, due to the quick growth of its main external competitor, the Quick-Food Restaurant industry in China, reports IBISWorld. Nevertheless, full-service restaurants have been experiencing steady growth, in line with steady growth in per capita incomes. Industry revenue has been increasing at an annualized rate of 16.5% in the five years through 2012 to $ 287.8 billion.

Competition in this industry is high and the market is very fragmented. The industry concentration level is expected to slightly increase in future years, with the growing importance of brand image, chain management and national presence. Some firms that have built strong brand images over many years have already begun to operate on a national scale with the development of chain operations. But, the development of chain operators slowed over the past five years due to difficulties making the operating model work. The main chain-operation models used in the industry are franchising and direct management of one's own restaurants. Some of the major players, such as China Quanjude Group, have shifted more toward the development of direct management, due to disadvantages in the legal framework regarding franchise operations and brand copyright infringement issues.

IBISWorld expects improvements in the legal framework for franchising and intellectual property rights will support the development of chain operations, and major players like Beijing Small Potato Catering Management Group, Zhongshan Seaport Catering Group, and Chongqing Taoranju Catering Culture Group, will continue enlarging their networks of branch restaurants and franchises. Technology changes within the Full-Service Restaurant industry in China will continue, largely in terms of credit card use. This will be strongly influenced by the development of China's financial markets and credit card businesses.

B2B Sales - Business 2 Community

B2B sales has been transformed by the application of many B2C Internet marketing techniques, but there are limits to the Internet where I think B2C can learn something from B2B. For example, with so many cool, self -service real estate websites like Zillow, Trulia, and Redfin available online, why is it that the vast majority of people still prefer to use local real estate brokers to buy and sell their homes? Why not just do it yourself?

Buying a home is complicated. All real estate brokers are required to pass professional certifications, and good real estate brokers spend years honing their craft in the course of many transactions in their local markets. The Internet can serve up all the information you want, but it won?t make you an expert. Plus, buying a home is an emotional roller coaster ride. For the first time home buyer, it can be downright scary. You can get all the disclosures, appraisals, comps and inspections you desire online, but the Internet will not hold your hand and tell you everything will turn out OK in the end.

b2b sales fear

This is the third post in a series that discusses the new breed of B2B buyer that has evolved in adaptation to the Internet and explores new rules of engagement that mirror those behaviors to maximize B2B sales and marketing effectiveness. The first two posts in this series explored customer self-service and B2B marketing. In this third and final post we turn our attention to B2B sales.

The Self-Service Limit in B2B Sales

A customer?s desire for sales engagement increases in direct proportion to purchase complexity. Thus, purchase complexity is a key element in identifying the right B2B sales model for your business. Simple purchases can be consummated with 100% customer self service, whereas more complex purchases require greater sales engagement as depicted in the image below adapted from the post Three SaaS Sales Models.

b2b sales models

Price and complexity define a strategic spectrum of B2B sales approaches
that gravitate strongly toward three distinct B2B sales models:
self-service, transactional and strategic.

Purchase complexity comes in two flavors: informational and emotional, both of which are clearly present in our earlier home buying example. Informational complexity arises when the buyer requires education to consummate the purchase. Emotional complexity arises when the purchase entails a personal risk to the buyer. When either or both of these purchase barriers becomes high enough, the buyer simply will not make the purchase without the aid of a salesperson. In response, successful B2B sales reps adopt sales behaviors that complement the buyer?s purchase behavior, offering expertise and trust in direct proportion to the respective amounts of uncertainty and fear felt by the buyer.

b2b sales behaviors

When a purchase requires extensive knowledge and risk,
the B2B buyer will look to the B2B sales rep to reduce the complexity.
Successful B2B sales reps adopt behaviors that complement the buyer?s behavior,
offering expertise and trust in direct proportion to the uncertainty and fear
arising from the the respective informational and emotional needs of the buyer.

The B2B Sales Arms Race ? The New Informed B2B Buyer

The new breed of B2B buyer is online and impatient. When she engages with a B2B sales rep, she?s done her research, but is stuck and doesn?t want to waste the time figuring out how to get unstuck. She doesn?t get something about your website, your product, your pricing or your company, so she sends an email or makes a call to sales. She is well informed, but the purchase complexity has worn out her patience. The worst thing a B2B sales rep can do at this point is wear her patience even thinner.

The new B2B buyer and B2B sales rep are engaged in an information arms race. Having followed the first two new rules engagement, you?ve published deep and wide and enabled efficient self-service. You?ve given in to the new breed of B2B buyer?s hunger for knowledge and speed, and in the process you?ve exacerbated the B2B sales rep?s challenge by eradicating the B2B sales rep?s information advantage. In fact, when the truly savvy B2B buyer knows more than your newbie B2B sales rep, you have a recipe for disaster. Today?s B2B sales rep must quickly assess the purchase knowledge and needs of the new B2B buyer and then lead, follow or get out of the way.

New B2B Buyer Rule of Engagement #5 ? Consultative Selling

Consultative selling is hardly new. What is new is that the B2B sales rep that fails to step up to the information arms race runs the risk of becoming at best irritating and at worst irrelevant. It is difficult, if not impossible for a sales rep to assess a buyer?s knowledge and needs if the buyer knows more than the rep about the purchase. There are few things more irritating to the new B2B buyer than having to listen to a script explaining something she already knows. Or worse, having to explain the product itself to the newbie B2B sales rep with insufficient training and experience.

If there are inherent complexities to purchasing your product, then your B2B sales rep must master them. The B2B sales rep can?t win the B2B sales information arms race simply by memorizing the website content, because the new breed of B2B buyer is already there. If all your B2B sales reps does is usher buyers around your website and take orders, then you are either leaving money on the table or your website isn?t simple enough, because your business should be 100% self-service. The new breed of B2B buyer expects fast answers to questions she can?t answer for herself. Therefore, today?s B2B sales reps must be purchase experts that are skilled at consultative selling in order to adapt their expertise quickly and efficiently to the needs of the new B2B buyer.

B2B Sales is Risky Business ? The New B2B Buyer is Only Human

While the Internet has wrought dramatic adaptations in the new breed of B2B buyer, its influence is minuscule compared to the millions of years of evolution that have preceded it. In the end, the new breed of B2B buyer is still an emotional creature that despite great attempts to cover it up in the form of ROI analyses, vendor comparison matrices, technical evaluations and the like is often driven by fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of public opinion. Fear of failure. What is portrayed as rational decision making and risk reduction is often better characterized as rationalization and CYA. There is no shame in this. This is who we are. We are not machines and it is critically important to us to feel good about the decisions we make. The savvy B2B sales rep understands this.

New B2B Buyer Rule of Engagement #6 ? Trust

Why is it that throughout history salespeople have had to deal with such bad raps? Because it?s assumed that they know things buyers don?t and the more they lie, the more money they make. Things have changed. This is the era of the new breed of B2B buyer. The stereotypical slick salesman is truly dead and the Internet killed him. Today?s B2B sales reps realize that open information and long term relationships require building trust, not breaking it. And while the marketing department can publish all the case studies, videotape all the customer testimonials, and get all the online recommendations it wants, when the stakes are high and the fear is real, there is no substitute for the B2B sales rep?s personal relationship with the buyer.

Developing trust with the new breed of B2B buyer is not easy, because most communication is virtual and terse. Emails must be crafted with care and skill. While the pre-millenium B2B sales rep needed to be a smooth talker, today?s B2B sales rep must be a smooth writer as well. Moreover, today?s B2B sales rep must actively cultivate opportunities to expand and personalize the relationship with the new B2B buyer. Although the days of the traveling B2B sales rep are over for all but the most expensive purchases, it is essential not to fall into the trap of hiding behind email. When it comes to building rapport and trust, chat is better than email, phone is better than chat, video is better than phone and face-to-face it better than video. When your business depends on trust, you must provide the technologies and opportunities for your B2B sales reps to engage with your new B2B buyers at a personal level. Because sometimes, they just need someone to talk to.

Note: I?d like to thank the Sales Leadership Council at ExecWorld for their conversations and contributions to this post.

US Department of Homeland Security Looking For a Few Good Drones

"Robotic Aircraft for Public Safety (RAPS)"

Ah, "Public Safety"! Can't you just see it now? Robot helicopters intelligently lifting flood victims from rooftops, rescuing kittens from treetops, spraying killer bee swarms with sleep inducing chemicals. They'll come to the aid of lost hikers, climbers and avalanche victims. They will patrol for lost boaters and surveil and protect tagged endangered species from predators- human or other. Their eye in the sky will alert emergency services of serious auto accidents, fires, or weather conditions. They will survey bridge structures and other critical infrastructure for damage, weakness and risk of failure. Their sensors will give us early warning of radiation leaks, chemical spills, dangerous pollutants, and excess allergens.

They will be our Public Safety angel!
I'm sure this is what our beneficent government has in mind, right?

As Obama and Romney prep for debates, VP candidates seek votes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden and Republican rival Paul Ryan sought votes in political battleground states on Saturday while their running mates took a day off the campaign trail ahead of a potentially make-or-break debate next week.

President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney face off on Wednesday in Denver, Colorado, for the first of three televised debates that could be crucial for the trajectory of the November 6 election.

Obama, who holds a small lead in national and many statewide polls, spent the day at the White House with no public events. He leaves on Sunday for Nevada, where he will engage in intense debate preparation with advisers.

Romney, the Republican nominee, was in Boston at his son Tagg's home. Romney heads on Monday to Denver, where he will engage in debate preparation as well.

The candidates' absence from the trail left the spotlight on Biden and Ryan. The two men have their own debate on October 11.

Biden was critical of the Wisconsin congressman during a rally in Ft. Meyers, Florida, a state with a rich cache of electoral votes and a large population of seniors. The Obama campaign is seeking to woo seniors by warning that a Romney-Ryan administration would make radical changes to the Medicare health insurance program for the elderly.

Biden said Ryan, whose budget was passed by the House of Representatives and included steep cuts in social programs championed by Democrats, illustrated how the two Republicans would govern if they won the White House.

"What Governor Romney did in picking Paul Ryan is he has given clear definition to all those vague assertions he was making during his primary campaign," Biden said.

"He picked Paul Ryan because Paul Ryan does represent the ideological - how can I say it - the center of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives."

Obama and Biden have sought to portray themselves as standard-bearers for the middle class, including the poor and elderly who rely on programs such as Medicare and Social Security. The strategy appears to have legs in Florida, where Obama is ahead in the polls.

Ryan, standing under a sign that said "We can't afford four more years," told a crowd in New Hampshire that he and Romney were more serious about tackling U.S. fiscal woes and accused Democrats of scaring the elderly.

"We need to tackle our nation's challenges before they tackle us. We need to save and strengthen Medicare and Social Security, and we're putting the ideas on the table on how to do that," Ryan said.

"We're not going to try and scare seniors. We're going to save these benefits for seniors and for my generation so that these promises are kept."

An average of polls by RealClearPolitics shows Obama leading Romney in New Hampshire by three percentage points.

Romney's team believes a strong debate performance will help close the polling gap, and Obama advisers say they expect the polls to tighten.

Both presidential candidates are slated to return to the campaign trail after the Denver debate. (Additional reporting by Lisa Lambert and Sam Youngman; Editing by Alistair Bell and Todd Eastham)

The only problem i see with this is that the conflicts with our post when it comes to thinking of how much mobs we really killed and such. Like mine went out killed a lot and not only that but crafted too. So then we're not looking at one variable but two.

The way I ran it before was that you only get one point per mob per post.

Say if in your post your character kills 3 MOBs. You'll only get Partial Points for 1 MOB. And you'll get your Partial Point for crafting. So, according to the point calculator you've gained a full point which means you've gained a level.

I was thinking about players forming parties to gain exp. Right now Gabriel, Ark and Kain are forming a party. Say Gabriel makes a post where they encounter a mob and kill it in his post all three of those characters get partial points for that mob. Then after that post Ark makes a post where they encounter another mob and slay it in that post- all three of them get partial points. Now, comes Kain's turn and the process is repeated earning all three of them partial points. Think of it as party grinding.

Remember all of this is in development. Seph has the final say on what he likes and what he doesn't like.

BofA Appoints Small Business Bankers - Zacks.com

As part of its previously announced plan to appoint more than 1,000 small business bankers across the country, Bank of America Corporation (BAC - Analyst Report) reported the recruitment of 138 such bankers in Florida. Of these, 58 bankers were hired in South Florida, 34 in Central Florida, 28 in Gulf Coast and the remaining in North Florida.

BofA?s decision to hire small business bankers throughout the country stems from the fact that small businesses were facing difficulties in obtaining the expertise required for running operations and maintaining finances. Hence, in 2010, the company announced its plan to employ a wide number of such bankers.

Often, small business owners face unique and complex financial demands. To understand the exclusive needs of these small business owners, customized guidance and constant attention of small business bankers are extremely essential. Therefore, BofA is hiring these specialized bankers to tap the huge demand for personalized help in the state.

Through BofA?s small business bankers, small business owners will be able to access local expertise and a dedicated resource that can properly interpret its exclusive needs. Small business bankers will evaluate the business owners? credit, deposits, payroll and cash management needs besides providing guidance. This, in turn, will enable these businesses to better manage its finances and work more efficiently.

According to BofA, small businesses are critical to the overall development of the economy. In spite of their significant contribution to the economy, these do not have access to better banking facilities. Therefore, the company took such an initiative to sort out the problems faced by small businesses and provide assistance to owners in order to ensure smooth facilitation of their business operations.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), in Florida, there are approximately 2 million small businesses. These businesses account for more than 98% of all employers and employ over 40% of the private-sector workforce. Moreover, almost 75% of the state?s gross domestic product (GDP) comes from these small businesses.

In these efforts, BofA has been constantly pursuing active lending to small-scale firms. In the first half of 2012, the company extended approximately $813.8 million (including $361 million in new originations) in credit to small businesses across Florida.

Much like BofA, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report) is also trying to accelerate the economic recovery by lending to small businesses. In the first six months of 2012, it provided credit of nearly $10 billion to small businesses and offered loan and raised capital of more than $460 billion for its commercial and consumer clients.

Though BofA is hiring small business bankers, recently The Wall Street Journal reported that the company is planning to layoff nearly 16,000 employees by the end of this year in order to boost its top-line growth. The job cuts are part of its ?Project New BAC?? the efficiency improvement initiative launched to rationalize its operations and shed non-core assets.

Currently, BofA retains a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates into a short-term Hold rating. Considering the fundamentals, we also maintain our long-term ?Neutral? recommendation on the stock.

How does the iPhone 5 battery life stack up?

The iPhone 5 started shipping (and hitting store shelves) on Friday, Sept. 21. According to Apple, the company has sold more than?five milli... Read more

4 hrs.

Apple tells us that the iPhone 5 offers "even longer battery life" than any of its predecessors, but what does that really mean? Can the new smartphone keep up ?with ?? or beat ? the competition?

Laptop Mag's Mark Spoonauer conducted some thorough tests while reviewing the iPhone 5, just as he does when checking out other smartphones, to find out.

"Our test goes out and surfs 50 of the most popular websites in succession every 60 seconds," he told me,?in describing the testing procedures Laptop Mag sets up. "It's meant to mimic how people use their phones.?Every minute or so, you might take it out of your pocket and use it."

Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has enough battery power to offer "up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time." In?Spoonauer's tests, the device "lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes."

To put that into perspective, consider that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a key?competitor, lasted for six hours and 55 minutes in Laptop Mag's tests. The iPhone 4S lasted five hours and 54 minutes, the HTC One X lasted 5 hours and 59 minutes, the Samsung?Galaxy Nexus lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. The current champ, when it comes to battery life, is?the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, with a battery life of 8 hours and 25 minutes, according to Laptop Mag's tests.

"It simply has a bigger capacity battery," says Spoonauer, referring to the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. "At some point physics has to take over." There's only so much that Apple's clever software tweaks can do to boost the life of a rather small battery. Of course a device such as the?Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx stands a chance of outrunning the iPhone 5 thanks to sheer capacity. "It's amazing that it lasts as long as it does, given how small the battery is in comparison to the competition," Spoonauer points out.

"For the [battery] size, I think that the iPhone 5 offers fairly good battery life," he concludes before cautioning that he has seen some complaints about battery life?on Apple-centric forums.?

We put a lot of trust in Spoonauer's quantitative tests, though, and until the anecdotal evidence of poor battery performance is overwhelming, we'll maintain our faith in his assessment. This little gadget seems to last "longer on a charge than most 4G LTE phones."

Important lessons learned from crime-time TV

David Giesbrecht / NBC

Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) questions Capt. Don Cragen (Dann Florek) as her boss finds himself on the wrong side of the law in the season premiere of "SVU."

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

We all hope we'll never be involved in the sort of crimes the fine folks from the various incarnations of "Law & Order" have found themselves in time and time again over the years. But in the off chance we do end up sitting at a police precinct desperately trying to remember our alibies (or desperately trying to pry the truth from the perp du jour -- depending on which side of the thin blue line we find ourselves on), there's a lot we can learn from the TV legal system.

And with "Special Victims Unit" kicking off its 14th season on Sept. 26, what better time than now to review the lessons we've learned from the popular procedural and others like it?

Lessons for regular folks:

  • Never trust your landlord.
Your landlord isn't just the person collecting your rent each month and ignoring your complaints about the air conditioning. He's also the guy who's going to completely sell you out once the cops stop by. In the land of the "Law & Order" franchises, landlords are only too happy to reveal every relevant and irrelevant tale about your life. And in more than a couple episodes, they were the ones who took their tenants' lives.
  • Drink nothing! Eat nothing!
Once you're at the precinct, if detectives offers you a stick of gum, then dollars to doughnuts, they're going to dig through the trash can later (or scrape it from the underside of the table you stick it to) and send that gooey sample to the lab for some DNA-retrieving magic. Just tough out the hunger pangs for a few more hours. But if you must drink, take that aluminum can or paper cup with you! (Watch out if they offer you a beverage in a mug. It might be tough to walk out of the precinct, mug in hand, without getting slapped with a theft charge on top of whatever it is you're already facing.)
  • Don't touch the detective.
Maybe you're feeling particularly punchy. Maybe you think, "I could take that detective in a fair fight." No, just no. No matter how frustrated (or even overly friendly) you may be, it's never OK to lay a hand on the officer standing before you. It only leads to regret and arrest.
  • Keep your mouth shut.
Yes, the police can be intimidating and mean (Hellooooo, dearly missed Det. Stabler!), but remember you have the right to remain silent no matter how much they badger you. ?(Side note: Remember whether the arresting officer read you your Miranda rights. It may come in handy if they don't.) Keep those lips sealed beyond asking for legal representation. Anything you say can and will be used against you later in the episode ...? er,?in the court of law.
  • Listen to your lawyer.
If you were clever enough to ask for a lawyer in the first place, then listen to said lawyer -- even if?the lawyer's advice seems like little more than the aforementioned "keep your mouth shut." Nothing doomed more suspects on any prime-time police procedural that the words they uttered after their lawyers said, "Don't answer that."

Lessons for law enforcement:

  • Respect the crime scene!
Didn't they teach this in police academy or day one on the force? Crime scenes are special places chock-full of prints, hair, fibers and tiny, random deposits of DNA, so it's best to tread lightly and not add your own DNA to the mix. We've lost count of the number of times detectives have put their ungloved hands all over evidence.?
  • They're called partners for a reason.
Bad things happen to good partners when they hit the pavement solo, so don't let them do it. Oh, sure, it's fine if they want to do a little research or visit the lab. But if they're actually meeting up with perps or faithfully following killers' footsteps, follow the advice ever kindergartener already knows -- stick close to your buddy.
  • If you want a suspect to talk, get up close and personal.
Yes, thanks to the intimate interrogations stylings of "Law & Order: SVU's" Det. Stabler and "L & O: Criminal Intent's" Det. Goren, it's clear that when someone doesn't want to spill the murderous beans, all you have to do is get your face near the suspect's face. Criminals have no defense for that classic maneuver.
  • But don't get too personal.
This is one of those lessons best learned by watching what not to do. Whenever a good cop gets a little too involved with a sympathetic victim, things go bad fast. When a case hits too?close to home, procedure flies out the window, and rookie mistakes are the order of the day.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" returns with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned from procedural crime dramas? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Cardio Workout for Bodyweight - Muscle Works Magazine

Today it?s time for the Top 5 Cardio exercises using nothing but your own bodyweight. Now I will say that sprints ? especially hill sprints or stair running are a great cardio workout but this is for people with limited space looking for some home exercise workout solutions or a good hotel room workout .

These are hard ? my clients hate most of them but I love em.

Give the cross-trainer or the treadmill the boot and do some real cardio. Best bit is you can do these anywhere because you only need your own bodyweight.

RIM Employee?s OOO Reply This Week Is Both Epic And Sad

sadberrysRIM is holding some sort of developer conference this week somewhere in North America. It's unclear what they actually announced or revealed because everyone keeps talking about this dumb music video. (If you're having a bad day, you should really watch it. But be warned, your ears will bleed and you may want to gouge your eyes out before/during/after.) Anyway, a friend of TC forwarded the following out of office reply from a RIM employee. ? WebMD Medical News By Daniel J. DeNoon Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Sept. 19, 2012 ? A coalition of consumer groups says kids should eat much less canned tuna to avoid mercury poisoning. In a new report issued today, the Mercury Policy Project says children should never eat albacore tuna. It advises parents to limit light tuna to one serving per month for kids under 55 pounds, and to two monthly servings for bigger children. ?Today we unfortunately have to bring consumers a warning about tuna. Despite its popularity, it should be a rare meal for children,? Sarah Klein of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, one of the consumer groups in the coalition, said at a news teleconference. The report includes tests of 59 samples of tuna from 11 states. The researchers purchased the tuna in the large 4-pound cans or foil packages from schools or from companies that supply schools. The tests showed that mercury concentrations varied widely from can to can. Even separate samples from the same can carried very different amounts of mercury. The study found somewhat lower mercury levels in light tuna than in FDA tests, but higher levels in albacore tuna than the FDA reports. Despite the study?s recommendations, the FDA stands by its own conclusions. ?FDA and EPA recommend that women of childbearing age and children consume no more than 12 ounces a week of canned light tuna and only 6 ounces per week of canned albacore tuna, which is higher in mercury. The average can of tuna holds 6 ounces of fish,? the FDA says in a statement. Benefits vs. Harm The report focuses only on the harms of tuna and not on its nutritional benefits, says Jennifer McGuire, RD, a dietitian at the Tuna Council of the National Fisheries Institute, a trade group that represents three major canned tuna producers. ?The report has no mention of omega-3 fatty acids, no mention of lean protein , and no mention of selenium, which has a positive interactive effect with mercury,? McGuire says. ?They just pulled out the trace amounts of mercury in isolation and tried to make a fuss about it. There is really nothing new here to be concerned about.? Edward Groth, PhD, the author of the coalition report, admits that most research on the effects of mercury has focused on pregnant women and early child development . He points to a 2009 study in Spain, which found that children with the highest mercury exposure had delayed mental development. Groth?s report also mentions a 2009 study by pediatric neurologist Gary Myers, MD, that looked at the effects of extreme seafood-eating by children in the Seychelles islands. The study did find a link between eating fish, mercury levels, and mental development. But it concluded that the data ?do not provide clear evidence? that the 9-year-old kids? development was harmed by their mercury exposure. Groth notes that a third of U.S. children?s mercury exposure comes from canned tuna. ?Don?t scare people away from giving kids tuna,? he said at the news conference. ?It is not a question of tuna or no tuna, it is how much tuna. There are a lot of benefits from tuna, and the benefit is great when the intake is once or twice a month.? SOURCES:Mercury Policy Project news teleconference, Sept. 19, 2012.Myers, G.J. HBT: Johnson sounds off on resting regulars

Managers of contenders and non-contenders alike often talk about wanting to put their best lineups on the field late in the season out of some sense of fairness to other teams, but not Davey Johnson.

Johnson told Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.com that once the Nationals lock up the division title he?s going to rest regulars even if other people think that might be helping one of their late-season opponents like the Cardinals:

I really don?t give a rat?s ass what somebody thinks about my club and who I put on the field to either help somebody else or I?m not supposed to rest my regulars after we clinch it, I?m resting my regulars. End of conversation.

Fair enough. You win a division so convincingly that you can essentially take the final week off and ? well, you?ve earned it. Tough for anyone that might hurt, but resting regulars in baseball isn?t quite like doing the same in basketball or even football. It?s not as if Johnson has trotted out the same lineup for 150 games already. And of course in the Nationals? case their previously choosing to ?rest? Stephen Strasburg will overshadow, say, Adam LaRoche getting a couple days off.

Romney pulls in big bucks in southern California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Having declared that his presidential campaign does not need a makeover, Republican Mitt Romney raised millions of dollars at two fundraisers in southern California on Saturday to help bankroll the final weeks of the race.

"I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going," Romney told a well-heeled crowd at the Grand Del Mar Resort hotel in Del Mar, California, about 12 miles from his beachfront house in La Jolla.

Some 650 supporters - including diet guru Jenny Craig - paid from $1,000 to $25,000 a head to hear Romney's 40-minute speech in Del Mar, have their photograph taken with the candidate and eat roast chicken breast served on a bed of Israeli couscous.

Spencer Zwick, the campaign's national finance chairman, assured donors their money would be spent wisely: to build a "massive ground game across the country in those swing states" and buy more television advertising.

The second Saturday event, at the Beverly Hilton, pulled in $6 million, Romney said at the start of his remarks.

About 1,500 tickets were sold at three tiers: $1,000, $15,000 and $50,000. Guests were entertained by comedian Dennis Miller and songwriter/producer David Foster.

With his standing in the polls slipping, Romney has been under fire from some in his party who feel he has not spent enough time visiting political swing states versus hob-nobbing with wealthy donors.

President Barack Obama spent the day campaigning - and also raising funds - in Wisconsin, a battleground state and the home of Romney's running mate, Representative Paul Ryan.

Romney had no public events on Saturday. He will fly to Denver on Sunday afternoon for a rally and among other stops will have a two-day bus tour in Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday.

Local resident Matt Romney, the second of the candidate's five sons, introduced his father and urged attendees to "open their wallets" at least one more time to help get the Republican's message out before November 6.

"It's our turn, you guys" said the elder Romney, 65, who was wearing dress pants and a sport jacket.

'DOESN'T NEED A TURNAROUND'

Boarding a plane in San Francisco on Saturday, Romney declined to answer a reporter's shouted question of whether he will soon adopt a more "aggressive" strategy.

But he told the crowd in Del Mar Saturday's event was his "last fundraiser in San Diego."

In an interview to be broadcast on Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney rejected calls for changes, pointing out that in national polls he is in a tight race with Obama.

"It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said in excerpts from the interview released by CBS on Friday.

At the Del Mar event, Romney lauded some local California entrepreneurs, including Ada Regan, owner of "Strawberry Hill," an historic mansion in Hillsborough, near San Francisco, where Romney raised funds on Friday night.

Regan's late husband Barrie, an electrical engineer and Italian immigrant, designed components that were used in the U.S. space program.

Pressing a familiar theme, Romney said Obama does not understand what it takes to build a business but rather wants government to play a larger top-down role.

"They DID build their business," Romney said of the Regans.

In Los Angeles Romney criticized Obama's support for certain union measures and said the key to improving education in the United States was "to put the kids and the parents and the teachers first, and the unions and their interests behind."
