NYC Nordstrom means a slew of new jobs

It?s official: Seattle?s best clothier is finally opening a big store in the Big Apple.

Nordstrom confirmed that it will open a long-awaited Manhattan flagship at Broadway and West 57th Street. The Post first reported the location Tuesday on its website.

At a splashy SoHo press conference yesterday with Mayor Bloomberg at his side, Pete Nordstrom, president of merchandising for the luxe retailer, said the 285,000-square-foot store will stretch seven stories high ? two more than the next-tallest shop in the 231-store chain.

?We fully expect this to be our most productive store,? Nordstrom said.

Officials said it will be located at 225 W. 57th St., anchoring a mixed-use skyscraper that will be erected by New York real-estate mogul Gary Barnett of Extell Development.

Bloomberg called the new Midtown tower, which is slated to open in 2018, ?a smart fashion statement,? gushing that it will create 1,000 new jobs and 5,000 construction jobs.

The news ends more than a decade of speculation about where and when Nordstrom would announce a Manhattan flagship. The retailer had scrutinized sites including the former Drake Hotel site, the World Financial Center and the Hudson Yards.

Nordstrom told The Post that he was seduced by ?the amount of people and the possibilities? in the area surrounding 225 W. 57th, which is just a block south of Columbus Circle.

Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements May ... - Body Health & Fitness

HOUSTON? Calcium and vitamin D supplements appear to be associated with high calcium levels in the blood and urine, and this could increase the risk of kidney stones, according to a new study presented at The Endocrine Society?s 94th Annual Meeting.

?The use of calcium and vitamin D supplementation may not be as benign as previously thought,? said principal investigator J. Christopher Gallagher, MD, who is a professor and director of the Bone Metabolism Unit at Creighton University Medical Center, Omaha, Neb. ?Pending further information, people should not exceed the guidelines suggested by the Institute of Medicine, which are 800 international units of vitamin D, and 800-1,200 mg per day of calcium.?

Dr. Gallagher and his colleagues studied 163 healthy, postmenopausal women aged 52-85 years. ?The women were randomly assigned to receive either a vitamin D supplement of 400, 800, 1,600, 2,400, 3,200, 4,000, or 4,800 IU a day or placebo. In this study,?calcium intake was increased from an initial intake of 691 mg to 1,200-1,400 mg (average 1,280 mg) per day. The investigators measured urine and blood?calcium levels at the beginning of the study, and then every three months for one year.

Inclusion criteria for this study were vitamin D insufficiency, defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) level below 20 ng/mL. Exclusion criteria were illness or medications known to affect vitamin D metabolism. The researchers defined hypercalcemia as a value greater than the normal range (8.9-10.3 mg/dL) and they defined hypercalciuria using a 24-hour urine calcium test that showed levels greater than normal (300 mg). Any abnormal event was verified after seven days; if the high values continued then the dose of the calcium supplements was reduced or the vitamin D supplementation was stopped.

The mean baseline serum 25OHD level was 15.6 ng/mL. The level increased on the highest dose of vitamin D to 45 ng/mL. Mean baseline serum calcium level was 9.47 mg/dL. This increased to 9.52 mg/dL. The mean 24-hour urine calcium level was 142 mg. This increased to 186 mg, according to the researchers.

The investigators found that 33% of subjects had an episode of hypercalciuria and approximately 10% had an episode of hypercalcemia on vitamin D and calcium. Altogether, the researchers observed 88 episodes of hypercalciuria and 25 episodes of hypercalcemia. The final 24-hour urine calcium increased slightly with vitamin D dose. ?However, no significant associations were found between episodes of hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria and vitamin D dose or serum 25 OHD. Prolonged hypercalciuria led to discontinuation of calcium in two subjects and discontinuation of vitamin D in one. No incidents of kidney stones were reported during this 12-month study.

?Because of the unpredictable response, it is not clear whether it is the extra calcium, the vitamin D or both together that cause these problems,? Dr. Gallagher said. ??However, it is possible that long-term use of supplements causes hypercalciuria and hypercalcemia, and this can contribute to kidney stones.?For these reasons, it is important to monitor blood and urine calcium levels in people who take these supplements on a long-term basis. This is rarely done in clinical practice.?

Taking vitamin supplements has become a widespread practice throughout many parts of the world. In the United States alone, it is estimated that nearly two-thirds of women take vitamin supplements, with calcium and vitamin D among the most commonly used. Despite their popularity, the precise health effects of long-term calcium and vitamin D supplementation remain unclear. Previous research has indicated that hypercalciuria may increase the risk of kidney stones. Hypercalcemia has been associated with many complications, including bone and kidney problems. ?However, there currently are no long-term data on hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria with regard to supplement use, according to Dr. Gallagher. In the Women?s Health Initiative study, researchers observed significant increases in renal stone incidents in women on a 400 IU a day dose of vitamin D3 and 1,000 mg extra calcium (total calcium intake 2,000 mg) after seven years.

?We think these hypercalciuric and hypercalcemic events occur in those women in the population that is hyper-absorbers, such as we see in idiopathic stone formers,? Dr. Gallagher told Renal Urology News. ?We expect that about 8% of the population has idiopathic hypercalciuria. So if 40 million women take calcium and vitamin D, then four million are at risk for hypercalciuria.?

With respect to screening those at risk who should not take calcium supplements, he said their analyses suggest that baseline 24-hour urine calcium should not exceed 180 mg.

YouTube?s Next New Creator Program Is Meant To Bring In The LOLs

youtubeOver the past year, YouTube has been busy with outreach to its community of independent creators through its YouTube Next program. The idea is to identify the next big YouTube stars and to provide them with the resources they need to improve the quality of their content, as well as help build their audiences. So far, the YouTube Next Creator program has focused on a couple of different verticals. Most recently it sought to help out vloggers, and before that worked to find talented producers of cooking and fitness videos. With that in mind, the next vertical it's focusing on is comedy.

Blackberry maker RIM to cut 5,000 jobs and delay new phones

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

Struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. revealed Thursday that its business is crumbling faster than expected.

The Canadian company posted worse results for its latest quarter than analysts had expected. It's cutting 5,000 jobs and delaying the launch of its new phone operating system, BlackBerry 10, until after the holiday shopping season.

After several delays, the first phone with BlackBerry 10 was expected later this year. It will be delayed even longer, to the first quarter of next year, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

Poor show: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion revealed worse quarter results than expected leading to a planned cut in 5,000 jobs announced on Thursday

The delay comes as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android phones.

Analysts have long said the new BlackBerrys will come out too late to reverse RIM's fortunes. RIM was pinning its hope on the new BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

?

Now it will come out months after a new iPhone is expected to be released. Current and previous iPhones have made the BlackBerry look ancient.

The jobs cuts are part of a previously announced initiative to cut $1 billion in annual costs this year. They represent about 30 per cent of RIM's workforce, which is currently at 16,500.

'It is necessary to change the scale and refocus the company,' Heins said on a conference call with analysts.

'I fully understand the impact a workforce reduction of this size has on our employees and the communities in which we operate. I assure you that we wouldn't move forward with a change of this size if we didn't think it was critical for our future.'

?????????????????? - RIM CEO Thorsten Heins

RIM shares plunged $1.38, or 15 per cent, to $7.75 in extended trading, after the release of the results. If they hold that level into regular trading Friday, they will set a new nine-year low.

Heins acknowledged that he delivered 'a lot of tough news.'

'This was a challenging quarter for the company on many fronts,' he said. 'And I am not satisfied with the financial performance we are reporting today.'

Heins had previously vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but he said Thursday that the timetable simply wasn't realistic. He said RIM's top priority remains a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys.

More delays: Their new operating system BlackBerry 10, pictured, has also been delayed until next year's first quarter

'I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers,' he said. 'There will be no compromise on this issue.'

He said the company will release fewer models than in the past. He also said RIM will launch a BlackBerry 10 model with a physical keyboard close to the launch of the touch-screen model. RIM earlier said it would come out with a touch-screen model first, but it didn't say when it would make one with a physical keyboard, a feature that many people stay with BlackBerrys for.

RIM previously said it hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options as it loses market share and its business erodes. Heins said they continue to study those options, but he declined to share those options and said the board would have to approve any changes.

RIM lost $518 million, or 99 cents a share, in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 2. This compares with a profit of $695 million, or $1.33 per share, a year ago.

Excluding impairment charges, the latest loss was 37 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a loss of 3 cents.

Revenue fell 43 per cent to $2.8 billion, well below analyst expectations at $3.1 billion.

RIM said it shipped just 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down 41 per cent from 13.2 million a year earlier.

Heins said the company is expecting the next several quarters to be 'very challenging.' He said RIM is in the midst of a platform transition and faces an increasingly competitive environment. Research firm IDC says BlackBerrys U.S. market share has plummeted from 41.1 per cent in 2007 to 3.6 per cent in first three months of 2012.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said the results and news of a BlackBerry 10 delay is far worse than the horrible news he had already expected.

'When a technology gets old, it's not a slow fade. It's a sharp cliff,' Gillis said.

'There is very little market for old technology.'

Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord, called the BlackBerry 10 delay dire and problematic in a rapidly changing technology sector.

'The biggest disappointment is the delay of the BlackBerry 10,' he said. 'It's extremely challenging for them to turn around the business when their new smartphone is launching that late.'

Kendra Wilkinson on Jenny McCarthy Playboy Spread: You Go Girl!

Count Kendra Wilkinson as a fan of the Jenny McCarthy Playboy cover.

K-Dubs doesn't plan on baring it all anymore, but she has a message for McCarthy, who, at 39 years old, stripped down for the latest issue of the mag.

That message is simple: Way to be!

Clothed Jenny McCarthy PicKendra Wilkinson Cleavage

"Good for her," Kendra, who's posed for her share of Playboy spreads and starred on Hugh Hefner's TV shows. "She definitely has it, why not flaunt it?"

Jenny McCarthy, the 1993 Playmate of the Year, returns to nude form on the cover of the July/August double issue, which hits newsstands this week.

The cover, featuring Jenny McCarthy nude, is already out.

"She looks great," the Kendra on Top star said at Las Vegas' Pure Nightclub. "If that gives her confidence at almost 40 years old, why not do it?"

McCarthy has maintained humor about her Playboy return, recently saying she wanted to pose once more "before everything really falls apart."

New drug dramatically improves survival in Hodgkin lymphoma patients

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? A new cancer drug with remarkably few side effects is dramatically improving survival in Hodgkin lymphoma patients who fail other treatments and are nearly out of options.

Loyola University Medical Center oncologist Scott E. Smith, MD, PhD presented survival data for the drug, brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris?), at the 17th Congress of the European Hematology Association. Smith is director of Loyola's Hematological Malignancies Research Program.

The multi-center study included 102 Hodgkin lymphoma patients who had relapsed after stem cell transplants. Tumors disappeared in 32 percent of patients and shrank by at least half in 40 percent of patients. An additional 21 percent of patients experienced some tumor shrinkage. Only 6 percent of patients had no response to the drug.

Sixty five percent of patients were alive at 24 months, and in 25 percent of patients, the cancer had not progressed at all.

These are "encouraging results in patients with historically poor prognosis," researchers said.

Loyola patient Michelle Salerno had failed two stem cell transplants -- one using her own cells and one using cells donated by her brother -- and multiple rounds of chemotherapy before going on brentuximab vedotin. After three or four infusions, she stopped suffering chills, sweats, high fevers and itchy pain from head to toe. And she experienced almost none of the side effects common to chemotherapy.

"I kept my hair, and never felt like vomiting," she said. "You get the drug, you go home, you feel good."

The standard regimen is a 30-minute infusion every three weeks. A patient typically receives 16 doses over 48 weeks.

Loyola has administered about 500 doses to 60 patients. "A lot of our patients are doing great on this regimen," Smith said.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system. Most patients can be cured with chemotherapy or radiation, especially when the disease is diagnosed in early stages. However, if initial treatment fails, the patient may require an autologous stem cell transplant. This procedure uses the patient's own stem cells to replace immune system cells that are destroyed by high-dose chemotherapy or radiation.

About 50 percent of patients who undergo autologus stem cell transplants relapse. Among patients who relapse, only 10 percent survive.

The Food and Drug Administration last year approved brentuximab vedotin for patients who have either failed an autologous stem cell transplant, are ineligible for a stem cell transplant or have failed two multi-drug chemotherapy regimens.

Brentuximab vedotin is an antibody attached to a powerful chemotherapy drug. The antibody acts like a homing signal, bringing the chemo drug to lymphoma cells. "Brentuximab represents a very interesting new concept in the fight against cancer," said oncologist Tulio Rodriguez, MD, who treats Salerno and is medical director of Loyola's Bone Marrow Transplantation Program. "It delivers powerful chemotherapy right where it needs to be -- into the cancer cell."

Cancer patients frequently are debilitated not only by their cancer, but also by chemotherapy treatments. Targeted drugs such as brentuximab can spare patients from the harmful effects of traditional chemotherapy, Rodriguez said.

The study found that side effects from brentuximab were generally mild. Only 9 percent of patients suffered severe peripheral neuropathy, 2 percent had extreme fatigue and 1 percent had severe diarrhea.

Salerno said the only significant side effect she experienced was mild neuropathy, which went away when the dose was lowered.

Salerno, 43, has been battling Hodgkin lymphoma for 10 years. Although she is not cured, she said, "I feel great and have a good quality of life."

Salerno, who lives in Lombard, said her treatments inspired her to start a business. She markets the Joey Pouch? -- a small, soft pouch designed to comfortably hold the lumens of a central venous catheter so a patient can be more comfortable in daily activities or while sleeping. It is worn around the neck, next to the chest. The Joey Pouch is named after Salerno's brother, Joey, who donated stem cells used in one of her transplants.

Rodriguez said he feels immense satisfaction when he goes over CT scans with Salerno to show her how her disease is heading back into remission. But he cautioned that brentuximab, like all drugs, has potential toxicities. "Patients should talk with their doctors about the pros and cons of taking this drug and discuss whether it is best for them," Rodriguez said.

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have invented a new toilet system that will turn human waste into electricity and fertilisers and also reduce the amount of water needed for flushing by up to 90 per cent compared to current toilet systems in Singapore.

Dubbed the No-Mix Vacuum Toilet, it has two chambers that separate the liquid and solid wastes. Using vacuum suction technology, such as those used in aircraft lavatories, flushing liquids would now take only 0.2 litres of water while flushing solids require just one litre.

The existing conventional water closet uses about 4 to 6 litres of water per flush. If installed in a public restroom flushed 100 times a day, this next generation toilet system, will save about 160,000 litres in a year -- enough to fill a small pool 10 x 8 metres x 2m.

The NTU scientists are now looking to carry out trials by installing the toilet prototypes in two NTU restrooms. If all goes well, the world can expect to see and even sit on the new toilet in the next three years.

Associate Professor Wang Jing-Yuan, Director of the Residues and Resource Reclamation Centre (R3C) at NTU who is leading the research project, said that their ultimate aim is not only for the new toilet system to save water, but to have a complete recovery of resources so that none will be wasted in resource-scarce Singapore.

"Having the human waste separated at source and processed on-site would lower costs needed in recovering resources, as treating mixed waste is energy intensive and not cost-effective," Prof Wang said. "With our innovative toilet system, we can use simpler and cheaper methods of harvesting the useful chemicals and even produce fuel and energy from waste."

Aiming to convert all waste to resource, the new toilet system which is part of a project that has received $10 million from Singapore's National Research Foundation's Competitive Research Programme in 2010, will be useful for new housing estates, hotels, resorts, and especially communities not linked to the main sewerage system and so require their own sewerage facilities.

How it works

The No-Mix Vacuum Toilet will divert the liquid waste to a processing facility where components used for fertilisers such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can be recovered.

At the same time, the solid waste will be sent to a bioreactor where it will be digested to release bio-gas which contains methane. Methane is odourless and can be used to replace natural gas used in stoves for cooking. Methane can also be converted to electricity if used to fuel power plants or fuel cells.

'Grey water' (used water from the laundry, shower and kitchen sink) can be released back into the drainage systems without further need for complex waste water treatment, while leftover food wastes can be sent either to the bioreactors or turned into compost and mixed with soil, resulting in a complete recovery of resources.

Assisting Assoc Prof Wang in the project are four other NTU researchers -- Asst Prof Chang Wei-Chung, Dr Chen Chia-Lung, Dr Apostolos Giannis and Dr Rajinikanth Rajagopal. This next-generation toilet and resource recovery system took the team one and a half years to develop and will be showcased to the industry at the upcoming WasteMET Asia 2012, held from the 1st to 4th July this year at Marina Bay Sands' Sands Expo and Convention Center.

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung updated Judge Koh enjoins sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Update: All Things D got a copy of Koh's order, and we just gave it a quick read. Turns out that she granted the injunction due to the strength of the merits of Apple's case and the unlikelihood that Samsung would invalidate Apple's design patent -- the court already held that the 10.1 is "virtually indistinguishable" from the iPad's design and likely infringes Apple's IP. Furthermore, Judge Koh held that, because Apple and Samsung are direct competitors in the tablet space and "design mattered more to customers in making tablet purchases," Apple would be irreparably harmed by further 10.1 sales. Those two factors outweighed any hardship suffered by Samsung, and thus, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stricken from US shelves.

Android Jelly Bean input options include updated keyboard, offline voice dictation, audio

On stage at Google I/O, the company is showing off its newest features for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which include a new keyboard with SwiftKey-like word prediction, and voice typing that works even when you're offline. From the demo on stage it worked quickly without the annoying lag of waiting for the server to process your words we've experienced from voice control so far. There's 18 new input languages including Persian and Hindi, although offline voice dictation is US English only for now. Also mentioned on stage are new audio cues for blind users, and support for Braille. Check out our Google I/O 2012 live blog for all the details.
