Head of Krupp Foundation dies at 99

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Berthold Beitz, the 99-year-old conservative head of the Krupp Foundation, died on Tuesday, potentially opening the way for deeper change at Germany's largest steelmaker ThyssenKrupp, already in the midst of a major strategic shift.

The death of Beitz, famous in Germany for rescuing Jews from the SS during World War II, was confirmed in a statement by on Wednesday and prompted tributes from Chancellor Angela Merkel and Jewish leaders.

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder called him "one of the great Germans of the past century" for his actions saving hundreds at the oil refinery he ran in the Boryslav region, now part of Ukraine, between 1941 and 1944.

"For many Jews he was a beacon of hope in a sea of despair," Lauder said. "He was a hero of the Holocaust at a time when it was a crime to be a humane person. He will never be forgotten for his tremendous acts of kindness."

The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, which Beitz headed, has long been seen as a barrier to a takeover or breakup of ThyssenKrupp, which is struggling to swallow billions in losses on its U.S. operation.

Beitz controlled board appointments and pulled strings in the background of an operation which ranges from steelmaking to elevators, submarines and industrial equipment.

For years he had blocked any dilution of the foundation's roughly 25 percent stake which allows it to block capital changes.

But earlier this year, Beitz appeared to signal a change in tone.

"I will not stand in the way of any steps which are for the good of the company," he told German paper Suddeutsche Zeitung, which many took to mean the foundation would allow a capital increase.

"Chief Executive Heinrich Hiesinger has become much more autonomous recently and for example cut the dividend to safeguard Thyssen's cash, but I expect that that management may be able to act even more freely now," a steel analyst said.

The foundation did not immediately announce a replacement for Beitz, a powerful businessman and former insurance executive who has headed the body since 1968.

The Krupp Foundation is an unconventional shareholder. Rather than being focused on maximizing profits, it is a philanthropic body tasked with funding social projects in the areas of education, science, healthcare, sports and culture.

Beitz played a key role in persuading the Krupp dynasty to hand over operational control of the company to the Krupp foundation and in 1998, helped engineer the merger between Krupp and Thyssen to form today's ThyssenKrupp.

"Germany has lost one of its most respected and successful corporate leaders who influenced Germany in important areas," Merkel said in a statement.

"What should in particular be remembered is his courageous and exemplary efforts to protect Jewish workers during World War Two and his early efforts to build bridges into Eastern Europe."

5 Surprising Things About Sunscreen

If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: putting on sunscreen and avoiding too much direct sunlight are important in preventing skin damage, signs of aging and cancer.

But this wasn't always a given. Although in many cultures people used to cover their bodies with oils, extracts, hats and clothing when venturing into the sun, people once thought that the sun's heat, rather than its radiation, caused the painful redness of sunburns.

One of the first experiments showing that something other than heat burns the skin was done by Sir Everard Home, an English physician, in 1820. Home exposed one of his hands to the sun, while covering the other with a black cloth. Only the exposed hand got sunburnt, but a thermometer showed the temperature around the covered hand was a few degrees higher.

Later, in 1889, Johan Widmark proved that it was mainly the ultraviolet rays, rather than luminous rays, that caused the redness of sunburned skin. His findings preceded the first medical recommendations of protection against sunlight, advice that continues to this date.

Sunscreens have since been evolving -- from pastes to creams, to lotions and sprays, and perhaps someday a pill. Here are five interesting things to learn about sunscreens:

1. Early sunscreens

Apart from umbrellas and hats, ancient cultures used a variety of sunscreens made from herbal extracts or mineral crusts to protect against the sun's rays. These early sunscreens included ingredients like rice bran oil, iron, clay and tar.

In more contemporary times, sunscreens were developed from horse chestnut extracts in the 1910s. This pasty sunscreen was sold under the name of Zeozon. In the 1930s, Ambre Solaire was introduced, an oily sunscreen that was easier to apply to the skin.

Sunscreens have even been subject to "Top Secret" military research. In the 1940s, the U.S. Army and Air Force asked the American Medical Association for advice about the most effective sunscreen for soldiers. Researchers examined the effectiveness of 12 compounds and concluded that red veterinary petrolatum can be an effective, waterproof sunscreen.

One of biggest steps in sunscreen's development has been the transition from the white paste of early sunscreens to an almost invisible cream. In older sunscreens, the light-reflecting compounds could appear white because they were not small enough. With nanotechnology, however, ingredients such as titanium dioxide are turned into small, invisible particles.

2. How does sunscreen work?

Sunscreens can be made of two types of ingredients: inorganic particles, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, or organic components, such as herbal extracts or compounds like oxybenzone.

The particles in sunscreens provide physical protection against UV rays by blocking or reflecting sunlight. Organic components absorb UV rays and release their energy as heat, providing chemical protection.

Dr. Shannon Trotter, professor of dermatology at the Ohio State University, says it is optimal to use a combination of both types of sunscreen, those providing chemical protection and those offering physical defenses. You can tell which is which by looking at the labeling required by the FDA.

Most sunscreens today have both types of ingredients.

The concept of sun protection factor (SPF) was introduced in the 1960s. SPF indicates how long a sunscreen protects the skin. Physicians recommend SPF 15 and SPF 30. Higher SPFs may not actually provide longer hours of protection, especially because the cream is usually washed off or absorbed after two hours.

3. Does sunscreen prevent people from getting vitamin D?

The body needs sunlight to produce vitamin D. So should we worry that wearing sunscreen may lead to vitamin D deficiency?

Studies have yielded mixed results, but large trials have shown that although sunscreen does lower the amount of vitamin D produced by the skin, these effects are not significant.

The American Academy of Dermatology does not recommend getting vitamin D from sun exposure; instead, the academy recommends getting this nutrient from the diet, by eating foods naturally rich in vitamin D, and from vitamin supplements. Foods that have high levels of vitamin D include fish oil, salmon and sardines, soy milk, eggs, fortified dairy products and mushrooms.?

4. The most recent sunscreens: spray-ons

The innovation of spray-on sunscreen brought ease of application to a whole new level. But are these products effective and safe?

Recently, the FDA warned against wearing spray-on sunscreen near open flames. In five incidents, people wearing the spray-on protection near sources of flame suffered significant burns. Although the specific products linked with these cases were recalled and are no longer on the shelf, many other spray-on sunscreen products may contain flammable ingredients, such as alcohol, and could catch on fire if they are too close to flames.

Trotter said spray-on sunscreen is effective if applied properly. "Some people spray it from too far away and only get a mist," she said, "The biggest challenge is to know how you actually use enough to cover all the areas of the body."

Another concern with sprays is toxicity. The FDA is investigating the health risks of accidentally inhaling spray-on sunscreen. Trotter recommended using a lotion for areas near the mouth and using spray for hair-bearing areas where it's difficult to apply a cream.

5. Little bites to remember

You need a volume of one shot-glass?worth of sunscreen to cover the body, and you should apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors. Don't forget the lips, Trotter said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays, and has an SPF of at least 15. People should check the expiration date, because some sunscreen ingredients might degrade over time or develop bacterial growth.

It's also recommended that people with oily skin or those who are prone to acne use a water-based sunscreen. And people sensitive to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) should buy brands that do not contain the compound.

The FDA recommends not applying sunscreen on babies younger than 6 months old. Instead, babies should be placed in shady areas or covered with clothing.

94% The Hunt

All Critics (88) | Top Critics (19) | Fresh (82) | Rotten (5)

The Hunt offers a powerful, provocative study of mob mentality and the fabric of trust.

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen delivers an astonishingly restrained and expressive central performance in The Hunt, an engrossing psycho-social drama by Thomas Vinterberg.

An intense, hard to watch drama, of a man's life torn apart by his fellow citizens. The performance is skilled enough that it won the top acting award at last year's Cannesfestival.

Mikkelsen's performance is what makes a good movie even better.

[A] harrowing but flawed study of an innocent man accused of pedophilia.

It leaves us not only with an unforgettable final image, but also the troubling thought that witch hunts, like war, will always be with us - all the more so in the modern era of instant communication.

Actor Mads Mikkelsen excels in this tense drama.

The cornerstone to The Hunt is the mesmerizing performance by Mikkelsen, whose portrayal of a Danish everyman's shattered descent into a horrifying nightmare is one of the most powerful performances I've seen in recent memory.

Mikkelsen makes you empathize with Lucas every step of the way and helps make The Hunt a real moral nail-biter.

It's a powerful and thought-provoking movie.

Mikkelsen is one of Europe's most respected actors, yet he's best known in the United States for playing evil characters... So it's interesting -- and rewarding -- to see what Mikkelsen can do as an innocent, well-meaning leading man.

"The Hunt" is a fantastic showcase for Mikkelsen, who shows he can play a cannibalistic serial killer on TV and a persecuted kindergarten teacher in the movies, and be just as believable as both.

The Hunt will have you balling up a fist and shedding a few tears as the tale unfolds, providing an exquisitely unpleasant conflict that's simply riveting to study.

Fittingly for a film that deals with actions that can't be undone, The Hunt leaves you with a sickening feeling that's almost impossible to shake.

Although the scenario is exaggerated for dramatic effect and it stumbles somewhat in the final act, the unsettling film is a provocative and timely examination of persecution and the perils of public perception.

An uncommonly thoughtful, and thought-provoking, entry in the social-issue drama subgenre, anchored by Mikkelsen's gripping performance.

A subtle piece of moral drama crowned by a truly beautiful performance from Mikkelsen, The Hunt puts every one of us in the crosshairs.

Child molestation is indeed horrific. Sometimes, the response to same can be equally disconcerting. The Hunt argues that all too well.

Mads Mikkelsen displays remarkable range as a subdued kindergarten teacher confronting sex-abuse charges in a small Danish town.

Mikkelsen and a terrific ensemble navigate complex emotions and moral quandaries in a terrain where a satisfying resolution is as hard to come by as a child who never tells a lie.

Oil train safety rule delayed by 1 year

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration has delayed by nearly a year a plan to boost safety standards for the type of rail car involved in a fiery explosion that killed at least 47 people in Canada this month.

Officials began work on the rule more than a year before an oil train derailed and exploded in Quebec on July 6 ? but the rule was never put in place. The proposal by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is intended to fix a dangerous design flaw in a rail car commonly used to haul oil and other hazardous liquids from coast to coast. The soda-can shaped car, known as the DOT-111, has come under scrutiny from safety experts because of its tendency to split open during derailments and other major accidents.

That's exactly what happened when an unattended Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway train came loose, hurtling down a 7-mile incline before derailing and igniting in Lac-Megantic, near the Maine border. All but one of its 73 cars were carrying crude oil, and at least five exploded, setting off massive explosions that devastated the small lakeside town of 6,000 people.

The structure of the tank car is not believed to be a factor in the derailment, which is under investigation. But transportation experts say the car's underlying design makes it prone to damage and catastrophic loss of hazardous materials.

A proposed rule to beef up rail-car safety was initially scheduled to be put in place last October, but it has been delayed until late September at the earliest. A final rule isn't expected until next year.

The pipeline safety agency said in a report this month that the latest delay was needed to allow "additional coordination" among officials and interested groups, including industry representatives who have resisted calls to retrofit existing cars, citing the expense and technical challenges such a requirement would pose.

In the first half of this year, U.S. railroads moved 178,000 carloads of crude oil. That's double the number during the same period last year and 33 times more than during the same period in 2009. The Railway Association of Canada estimates that as many as 140,000 carloads of crude oil will be shipped on Canada's tracks this year, up from 500 carloads in 2009. Much of that increase is from oil produced in the Bakken oil patch in North Dakota and Montana and surrounding areas. The train that crashed in Quebec was carrying oil from North Dakota to a refinery in New Brunswick, Canada.

The DOT-111 tank car represents more than two-thirds of the rail fleet carrying crude oil.

The Associated Press reported in September that the DOT-111 tank car has been allowed to haul hazardous liquids from coast to coast even though transportation officials were aware of the design flaw.

The AP had reviewed 20 years of federal rail accident data involving DOT-111 cars used to haul ethanol and found that the cars had been breached in at least 40 serious accidents since 2000. In the previous decade, there were just two breaches.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is urging the Obama administration to phase-out DOT-111 tank cars or require freight rail carriers to retrofit them to prevent potential explosions or spills. Schumer described the DOT-111 cars as "flawed, out-of-date and a factor in hazardous material spills during derailments," such as the one in Quebec.

While freight rail should not be "demonized," increased traffic of rail cars carrying crude oil "warrants increased safety measures, and that begins with putting the safest, most up-to-date tank cars on the tracks," Schumer said at a news conference last week in Albany, N.Y.

Democratic Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree of Maine said the government should conduct a wide-ranging safety review as transportation of oil by train increases dramatically in Maine and other states. Nearly 30,000 barrels of per day crossed Maine in March ? 15 times more than the same period a year earlier, the lawmakers said in a letter to National Transportation Safety Board and other officials. The train that derailed in Quebec was scheduled to cross Maine on its way to a refinery in St. John, New Brunswick.

A spokeswoman for the American Association of Railroads, which represents the rail industry, said the group shares Schumer's belief in putting safety first.

"If safer and better DOT-111s can be had, then it makes good sense to ensure that the design and standards that these cars are built to, must be tougher than the federal standards that exist today," said spokeswoman Patricia Reilly.

Rather than waiting for the Obama administration to act, Reilly said, the industry has adopted voluntary standards ensuring that all DOT-111s ordered after October 2011 meet tough requirements recommended by the NTSB after a deadly ethanol train derailment and explosion in Illinois in 2009.

But those voluntary standards do not apply to an estimated 40,000 cars built before October 2011 that carry oil, ethanol and other flammable liquids.

The railroads and the oil industry have resisted calls to retrofit existing cars, saying that would present technological and engineering challenges and cost at least $1 billion.

The American Petroleum Institute, the largest lobbying group for the oil industry, declined an interview request. But in comments submitted along with the Renewable Fuels Association, the American Chemistry Council and other groups, the API asked the Obama administration to focus its rule-making on cars built after October 2011.

The industry's proposal "ignores the safety risks posed by the current fleet," the NTSB said in a report on safety recommendations last year. Older tank cars "can almost always be expected to breach in derailments that involve pileups or multiple car-to-car impacts," the report said.

The NTSB cited the car's "inadequate design" in the 2009 crash outside Rockford, Ill., which killed a woman and injured 11 others. The NTSB called for a redesign or replacement of the DOT-111 cars. A decision on whether to require a redesign is up to the pipeline safety administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The DOT-111 car's steel shell is too thin to resist puncture in accidents, the NTSB said, and the ends of the car are vulnerable to ruptures. Valves used for unloading and other exposed fittings on the tops of the tankers can also break during rollovers.

The flaws were noted as far back as a 1991 safety study.

The pipeline safety administration is considering whether to split the proposed rule into one that addresses new tank cars and another that addresses possible retrofits, said spokesman Gordon Delcambre Jr.

Software experts attack cars, to release code as hackers meet

Security

Car hacking is not a new field, but its secrets have long been closely guarded. That is about to change, thanks to two well-known computer software hackers who got bored finding bugs in software from Microsoft and Apple.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek say they will publish detailed blueprints of techniques for attacking critical systems in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape in a 100-page white paper, following several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government.

The two "white hats" ? hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them ? will also release the software they built for hacking the cars at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas this week.

They said they devised ways to force a Toyota Prius to brake suddenly at 80 miles an hour, jerk its steering wheel, or accelerate the engine. They also say they can disable the brakes of a Ford Escape traveling at very slow speeds, so that the car keeps moving no matter how hard the driver presses the pedal.

"Imagine what would happen if you were near a crowd," said Valasek, director of security intelligence at consulting firm IOActive, known for finding bugs in Microsoft's Windows software.

But it is not as scary as it may sound at first blush.

They were sitting inside the cars using laptops connected directly to the vehicles' computer networks when they did their work. So they will not be providing information on how to hack remotely into a car network, which is what would typically be needed to launch a real-world attack.

The two say they hope the data they publish will encourage other white-hat hackers to uncover more security flaws in autos so they can be fixed.

"I trust the eyes of 100 security researchers more than the eyes that are in Ford and Toyota," said Miller, a Twitter security engineer known for his research on hacking Apple's App Store.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company was reviewing the work. He said the carmaker had invested heavily in electronic security, but that bugs remained ? as they do in cars of other manufacturers.

"It's entirely possible to do," Hanson said, referring to the newly exposed hacks. "Absolutely we take it seriously."

Ford spokesman Craig Daitch said the company takes seriously the electronic security of its vehicles. He said the fact that Miller's and Valasek's hacking methods required them to be inside the vehicle they were trying to manipulate mitigated the risk.

"This particular attack was not performed remotely over the air, but as a highly aggressive direct physical manipulation of one vehicle over an elongated period of time, which would not be a risk to customers and any mass level," Daitch said.

'Time to shore up defenses'
Miller and Valasek said they did not research remote attacks because that had already been done.

A group of academics described ways to infect cars using Bluetooth systems and wireless networks in 2011. But unlike Miller and Valasek, the academics have kept the details of their work a closely guarded secret, refusing even to identify the make of the car they hacked.

Their work got the attention of the U.S. government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an auto cybersecurity research program.

"While increased use of electronic controls and connectivity is enhancing transportation safety and efficiency, it brings a new challenge of safeguarding against potential vulnerabilities," the agency said in a statement. It said it knew of no consumer incident where a vehicle was hacked.

Still, some experts believe malicious hackers may already have the ability to launch attacks.

"It's time to shore up the defenses," said Tiffany Strauchs Rad, a researcher with Kaspersky Lab, who previously worked for an auto security research center.

A group of European computer scientists had been scheduled to present research on hacking the locks of luxury vehicles, including Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, at a conference in Washington in mid-August.

But Volkswagen obtained a restraining order from a British high court prohibiting discussion of the research by Flavio D. Garcia of the University of Birmingham, and Roel Verdult and Baris Ege of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

A spokeswoman for the three scientists said they would pull out of the prestigious Usenix conference because of the restraining order. Both universities said they would hold off on publishing the paper, pending the resolution of litigation.

Volkswagen declined to comment.

Driver of derailed Spanish train charged with 79 counts of homicide

Francisco Garzon is now under arrest, as the investigation centers on his role in the crash that killed or injured almost everyone on board. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Tracy Rucinski, Reuters

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain - The driver of a Spanish high-speed train that derailed and killed 79 people was released pending trial on charges of reckless homicide, a judge ruled on Sunday night.

Francisco Garzon, 52, had been under arrest since Thursday. He is suspected of driving the train too fast through a tight curve on the outskirts of the northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela.

Examining Magistrate Luis Alaez formally charged Garzon with "79 counts of homicide and numerous offences of bodily harm, all of them committed through professional recklessness," the court said in a statement.

In a closed-door hearing before Judge Alaez, Garzon admitted taking the curve too fast, blaming it on a momentary lapse, according to media reports.

Alaez set the following conditions of release: Garzon must check in regularly with the court, surrender his passport and not drive trains.

None of the parties in the case, which include state train operator Renfe, state railway firm Adif and two insurance companies, had asked for Garzon to be jailed pending trial, and he was not seen as a flight risk, the court statement said.

At 8:41 p.m. on Wednesday the eight-carriage, high-speed train slammed into a concrete wall, crumpled, and some of the cars caught fire. The impact was so strong that one of the carriages was thrown several meters high over an embankment.

The death toll from Spain's worst train disaster in decades rose to 79 after one injured person - a woman from the United States - died on Sunday.

Seventy people remain hospitalized with injuries from the crash, 22 are in critical condition.

Garzon has worked for Renfe for 30 years, 10 as a driver. His father also worked on the rails and he grew up in Renfe-owned housing in the northwestern town of Monforte de Lemos and went to school with other train-workers' children.

After the accident he was hospitalized with a head injury. On Saturday he was released from the hospital but remained in police custody until he was taken to the hearing at Santiago de Compostela's main courthouse.

Neither lawyers nor members of Garzon's family could be reached for comment.

Alaez has been assigned to investigate the case and will also look at whether the train, the tracks or the security system that slows down the trains were at fault.

UP TO THE DRIVER
The Alvia train involved in the accident, one of three types of high-speed train services that run in Spain, received a full maintenance check on the morning of the journey, the head of Renfe said, and security systems were in good shape.

"As far as we know, the train was in perfect condition when it set off on its journey," Renfe President Julio Gomez-Pomar told newspaper ABC.

The Alvia trains run both on traditional tracks, where drivers must heed warning systems to reduce speed, and on high-speed tracks where a more sophisticated security system will automatically slow down trains that are going too fast.

At the section of the track where the accident happened, it was up to the driver to respond to prompts to slow down.

Gomez-Pomar rejected criticism that the safety system was insufficient, saying the debate "does not make much sense".

CELEBRATIONS CANCELED
The city of Santiago was meant to be celebrating the yearly festival of St. James on July 25, with thousands of Christian pilgrims arriving after walking the famous Camino de Santiago ancient pilgrimage trail.

A week of concerts and other cultural events were canceled after the train crash on the eve of the festival. On Sunday, black ribbons of mourning hung on the empty stages that had been set up.

Pilgrims, many of them fresh off the trail and carrying backpacks, crammed into a standing-room-only Mass in Santiago's centuries-old cathedral where they were asked to remember the victims of the accident.

At the cathedral gates, along with flowers and candles commemorating the dead, some people left walking sticks from their journeys and others placed shells, the symbol of St. James and badge of honor for the pilgrims who complete the journey.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who visited the crash site after the tragedy, is due to return on Monday to Santiago, the city where he was born, for an official funeral ceremony for the victims.

Dolores Mato, 57, a shopkeeper who works close to the ancient cathedral, expressed sympathy and grief for the victims and their families, but also for Garzon, who she said had been "crucified" in the media.?

New York mayoral hopeful Weiner loses top aide amid campaign tumult

By Eric M. Johnson

(Reuters) - The campaign manager who helped to guide Anthony Weiner's bid for New York City mayor resigned over the weekend, a spokeswoman said on Sunday, as the Democratic former Congressman grapples with slumping poll numbers and fresh revelations of his sexually charged Internet activity.

Danny Kedem, 31, who joined Weiner's long-shot campaign in early spring, helped to manage day-to-day political operations before abruptly quitting, said spokeswoman Barbara Morgan. She declined to comment on the timing or give a reason for his departure.

Weiner, 48, once a liberal voice in the U.S. Congress, resigned in June 2011 after admitting he used Twitter and other social media to send lewd pictures of himself to women he met online.

Weiner, speaking to reporters outside a Brooklyn church on Sunday, did not offer an explanation for Kedem's departure but said he had done a "remarkable job" and praised his remaining campaign staffers.

"They've dealt with a presidential level of scrutiny and they've dealt with a candidate who has made some mistakes in his past and they are coming back up now," he said.

Weiner, who launched his bid to be the next mayor of New York City earlier this year, briefly led his Democratic rivals in polls raising the possibility that he could overcome the scandal.

That momentum stalled this week when a gossip website called The Dirty published a series of sexually explicit messages and images that an unidentified young woman said she had received from Weiner, including pictures of his penis.

Weiner admitted that the messages were real and said he had continued interacting with women online as recently as last summer, more than a year after his resignation.

On Thursday, he said he had sent lewd online messages to up to three women and had exchanges with six to 10 women over the years.

"I can't tell you absolutely what someone else is going to consider inappropriate or not," Weiner said.

Recent polling shows Weiner trailing 9 percentage points behind City Council Speaker Christine Quinn with less than two months left before the Democratic primary.

In the first survey since Weiner admitted the chats had continued after his resignation from Congress, Quinn led with 25 percent among Democrats, while Weiner followed with 16 percent, according to the NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll.

"Animal House" isn't over! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

If you see a lot of explosions and car crashes this weekend, never fear. It's just Delta House returning to Faber College for their anniversary.

Saturday marks the 35th anniversary of the release of "National Lampoon's Animal House," the college movie to end all college movies, the film that taught a generation how to throw a toga party and how to impersonate a zit, all while cementing the late legend John Belushi's image as the ultimate party animal.

In honor of the anniversary, we present our seven favorite "Animal House" quotes:

1, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

2. "Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

3. "As of this moment, they're on double secret probation."

4. "I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part."

5. "See if you can guess what I am now. I'm a zit!"

6. "Toga! Toga! Toga!"

7. "Seven years of college down the drain."

International Football: Kewell could return to Socceroos squad

Australia boss Holger Osieck says veteran Harry Kewell could still make his squad for next year's World Cup.

Kewell could return to Socceroos squad

The former Leeds and Liverpool attacker hasn't played for the national team for over a year but has looked extremely sharp since returning to his homeland with Melbourne Heart last month.
Kewell has represented the Socceroos at each of the last World Cups and with the team currently struggling in attack, momentum has started to grow behind a recall for the veteran.
Osieck has always maintained that he won't rule anyone out of contention and says the 34-year-old remains in his plans ahead of next summer's tournament in Brazil.
"I always kept saying, whoever plays and performs has a chance, no matter what his name is, his position is, his club is. It's about performance and regular play," the coach told reporters. "Due to the fact that he's back in Australia it's very easy to follow up on him (Kewell)."

Korean divide lives on 60 years after end of war

PANMUNJOM, North Korea (AP) ? Some Americans call it the "Forgotten War," a 1950s conflict fought in a far-off country and so painful that even survivors have tried to erase their memories of it.

The North Koreans, however, have not forgotten. Sixty years after the end of the Korean War, the country is marking the milestone anniversary with a massive celebration Saturday for a holiday it calls "Victory Day" ? even though the two sides only signed a truce, and have yet to negotiate a peace treaty.

Signs and banners reading "Victory" line the streets of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital. The events are expected to culminate with a huge military parade and fireworks, one of the biggest extravaganzas in this impoverished country since leader Kim Jong Un took power in late 2011.

Here at the border in Panmunjom, the war never ended. Both sides of the Demilitarized Zone are heavily guarded, making it the world's most fortified border, and dividing countless families with sisters and brothers, fathers and mothers, on the other side. The North Koreans consider the presence of 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea a continued occupation.

In some ways, war today is being waged outside the confines of the now-outdated armistice signed 60 years ago.

The disputed maritime border off the west coast of the Koreas is a hot spot for clashes. In 2010, a South Korean warship exploded, killing 46 sailors; Seoul blamed a North Korean torpedo. Later that year, a North Korean artillery attack on a front-line South Korean island killed four people, two of them civilians.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong Un enshrined the pursuit of nuclear weapons as a national goal, calling it a defensive measure against the U.S. military threat. In recent months, the warfare has extended into cyberspace, with both Koreas accusing the other of mounting crippling hacking attacks that have taken down government websites in the North and paralyzed online commerce in the South.

Sixty years on, as both Koreas and the United States mark the anniversary Saturday, there is still no peace on the Korean Peninsula.

___

The two sides don't even agree on who started the war.

Outside the North, historians say it was North Korean troops who charged across the border at the 38th parallel and launched an assault at 4 a.m. on June 25, 1950.

North Korea agrees that war broke out at 4 a.m. ? but says U.S. troops attacked first. A photo offered as proof at a Pyongyang war museum shows U.S. soldiers advancing, rifles cocked, as they run past the 38th parallel.

"The real history is that the U.S. started the war on June 25, 1950," Ri Su Jong, a 21-year-old guide at a flower show in Pyongyang, said Tuesday. "They first attacked our country, and we quickly counterattacked."

Ri, whose grandfathers both fought in the war, said she was taught that the North Koreans marched into Seoul three days later, "liberating" South Korea from U.S. forces. A panoramic diorama at the war museum shows soldiers hoisting the North Korean flag in a sea of fire and destruction.

As North Korean troops advanced further south, the U.S. retaliated with bombing campaigns that left both Seoul and Pyongyang in rubble.

"The U.S enemy engineered the war, boasting of the advantage of their air power, flying normally 500 or 700 flights, sometimes up to 1,000 flights a day, both on the front and in the rear," said North Korean Maj. Gen. Kim Sung Un, a war veteran who is now 84. "All the factories and workplaces ... were reduced to ashes."

Then came the counterattack.

Dick Bonelli was a 19-year-old from the Bronx, a self-professed troublemaker, who was shipped off with the U.S. Marines to fight in a country he never knew existed. He arrived in September 1950 with the amphibious assault known in as the "Inchon Landing," the surprise attack that helped the U.S.-led U.N. forces push the North Koreans back.

Bonelli later took part in one of the most costly fights of the Korean War: the 17-day winter campaign in the mountainous region of the North then known by its Japanese name, the Chosin Reservoir. Several thousand were killed in combat, and thousands more died of frostbite.

"I tried for 30 to 40 years to forget it all," Bonelli said in Pyongyang on Thursday, an American flag pinned to his blazer. "Who wants to remember that? It's war. It was terrible."

He's back in North Korea for the first time since 1950. His hope is to revisit Fox Hill, the remote spot that he guarded that first cold winter of the war. Tears in his eyes, he called it an emotional journey to a place that he tried for decades to forget.

___

How the main players in the war will mark Saturday's anniversary is a telling indication of how each country considers the conflict.

North Korea is treating it as a celebration, an occasion to rally support for the country's leader and draw attention to the division of the Korean Peninsula.

In South Korea, it's a day of remembrance. For the government, it's a day of thanks to the 16 U.N. nations that came to South Korea's defense during the 1950-53 war. For many, it's also a day of sorrow as they remember family members left behind in the North, forever divided from their loved ones.

In Washington, President Barack Obama on Thursday declared July 27 National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. He paid tribute in his proclamation to the veterans who fought to "defend a country they never knew and a people they never met." He is to speak Saturday at the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

___

Back in 1953, the architects of the armistice that took two years to negotiate were so sure the truce would be temporary that they cobbled together corrugated sheds to serve as conference halls in just a handful of days.

Sixty years later, those once-temporary buildings are still standing. On the North Korean side, the drafty building that served as the venue for armistice talks is now the "peace pagoda," a popular stop on a fledgling tourist trail from Pyongyang. A tattered version of the armistice agreement and the U.N. flag are displayed.

The sheds straddling the border where the two sides sometimes meet are still called T1, T2 and T3: the "T'' stands for "temporary."

Peace is up to Washington, North Korean Lt. Col. Nam Dong Ho told The Associated Press recently.

"The division of the Korean Peninsula is less an issue between the North and South and more of an issue between North Korea and the U.S," he said. "Last time, we negotiated an armistice agreement. But next time, we will bring the U.S. to its knees to sign a letter of surrender."

Ri, the flower show guide, also blames the U.S.: "Of course we want peace. ... But the American imperialists keep provoking us with their hostile policy."

The visiting U.S. veteran, Bonelli, says simply that a peace treaty is long overdue.

"It's ridiculous to have an armistice this long and not to sit down, break bread and make peace," he said. "The future is about the children. Let's stop it."

Florida Congresswoman retweets expletive message

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Photo by John Parra/WireImage)

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen retweed an expletive message from a Kim Jong-un parody account.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the Florida Republican who retweeted an expletive-filled message, did so on purpose, her office confirmed Wednesday.

When the posting ?SH*T JUST GOT REAL PANAMA? from the Kim Jong-un parody account @KimJongNumberUn, appeared on her Twitter timeline Tuesday - many assumed a wayward intern was to blame.

But her office denied the notion, insisting the politician from Miami retweeted the message herself and made no apologies for doing so.

The original tweet came after a North Korean ship laden with weapons from Cuba was seized near the Panama Canal.

Ros-Lehtinen was born in Cuba and takes an active role in calling for change in the Communist country - even calling for Fidel Castro?s assassination.

?She does know its an impostor? account, her spokesman Alex Jones added in comment to the Daily News, regarding the Twitter account that parodies the North Korean leader.

The 62-year-old is an avid Twitter user and strikes a playful tone on her account, @RosLehtinen.

Wednesday she posted a pic of herself in seersucker, in honor of the Hill?s summer nod to the cool fabric.

?#SeersuckerWednesday,? she announced, in a caption for a photo of her pant leg and shoes decked out in the design.

?The shoes are a bit over the top, si? Dex says: 2 much Matlock,? she joked, in reference to her husband Dexter?s fashion advice.

Kim Jong-un didn?t respond to her request for fashion advice.

Wash Behind Your Ears - And Nine Other Dating Dos and Don'ts

    Get UK Lifestyle Newsletters:

Online dating needn't be as bad as you think. I survived, so can you. Just watch out for the don'ts and live by the dos.

    DO: Have a decent photo
And more than one. You really don't want to see that look on your date's face when you turn up. Make sure they are well represented pictorially too. Cameras, contrary to popular belief, are compulsive liars. (Also, make sure you are going on a date with the person you think you are.)

DON'T: Lie on your dating profile
If you really want this to go somewhere, you'll have to be honest - so no adding mystery inches to your height, re-imagining job titles or boasting of non-existent celebrity connections.?You'll be found out for sure, and, your date will wonder just what else you're lying about.

    DO: Take chances
Is your potential date a bit duller over email than you'd like? Maybe he's got a squished nose and looks like he could do with some exercise? You can wait and wait for perfection only for it never to arrive. While online dating does come with its own level of shallowness - after all, you're reading profiles and making judgements on what they say and look like - don't be afraid to step out of your natural boundaries. Sometimes the biggest online dullard ducklings turn into fabulous exotic swans in the flesh. (It does happen, sometimes. It does!)

DON'T: Be afraid to say no
Some guys on dating sites can be pretty insistent over email or text. If you really don't want to go, be firm, but polite. Just because you don't have anything better to do doesn't mean you should feel under pressure to go on a date with them. You don't even have to make up an excuse.?

DON'T: Go for dinner on the first date
Once you're sitting at a table with this stranger, you're trapped until the bill comes - and they could be a very slow eater and dull to boot. Also, you don't want to spend your first meeting picking food out of your teeth, or, worse, having it spat all over you as he describes in great detail his big project at work.

    DO: Be on time
It's a small thing, but even slight lateness can set a miserable tone for the rest of the date and come between you. If you are going to be late, a text with an apology and how long you expect to be should be hitting your date's phone at least five minutes before your assigned meeting time.

    DO: Be clean
Sounds like an obvious point, but you'd be surprised how often dates turn up without showering. If you're coming straight from work, take a spare T-shirt with you and some cologne so you can have a quick spritz before you arrive.

    DON'T: Be tipsy
Never arrive drunk or come from somewhere else where you've been drinking. You want to be at the same level when it comes to sobriety. A tipsy date can be boring company.

    DO: Talk
Contribute to the conversation. It's great that you're "a good listener" but you're wrong if you think letting someone do all the talking makes for a great date. They want to get to know you too - so tell 'em!

    DON'T: Be mean
Sometimes you arrive on a date and know immediately they're not for you. So your hopes are dashed, bad luck, but still treat your date with a bit of respect. Stay for a drink - maybe even two - take a little bit of time to get to know them and then, if it's still a no, end the night with a polite 'thank you'. Don't use your disappointment as an excuse to treat your date as an emotional punchbag. They're better than that. Hopefully, so are you.

I cannot accurately answer the poll because I don't know what the Cha Cha slide is, or the Hand Games, or Temple Run. I can however say that I do fairly well with simple board games with written instructions such as Monopoly or the Game of Life. I played the Wii once with my daughter and as usual, I suck at video games, and yes more so with the motion type.

Not bashing you because I admit that I do it too (a lack of theory of mind), but many won't be able to answer this because they might not know what some of the choices are. By posting those specific choices, you are assuming everyone knows what they are. Again, not bashing because I have the same problem, I automatically think that because I know what something is, then so does everyone else.

I don't know what Temple Run is. Dr. Grandin in a tearing hurry, perhaps???

I hate ALL video games, not just Wii Sports Resort (though I did stop playing altogether when the 64-bit graphics came out, as the 3D view makes me motion sick).

I'm terrible at hand claps-- DD11 loves them; I always remember the ditties but cannot keep up with the movements. We still have fun with them though-- I learned during my time as an afterschool volunteer that the whole point is to laugh at yourselves when you find yourself out of time and tripping over yourself, NOT to be the last one clapping as previously thought.

I think the Cha Cha Slide is some kind of dance. The only way I dance is 1) Drunk on some romantic occasion where it's expected, or 2) With a broom, to maudlin bluegrass music, as I sweep the floor.

    Which I do daily.

I LOVE board games. I do not typically win-- DH is a strategy whiz and wins 9 times out of 10-- but we all enjoy the sh** out of board games. They are the #1 indoor past time around here, for a reason.

You know-- When you suck at something and you have to do it anyway (unless you're getting paid, in which case you need to find something else to get paid for), or want to do it anyway, or the people you are with want to do it anyway, LAUGH AT YOURSELF.

Not meanly, but-- it makes sucking a lot more fun.

    Hand games
I'm not too good with complex hand games, because of hand motor skill problems. I got really confused when I did clapping games at school, and when I tried the Knife Song (with a pen).

    Temple Run
I love Temple Run. Have no problems with that. Smile

    Board games
Fine with board games. I'm not too keen on them because they're boring. I don't really have any problems with them.

    Wii Sports Resort
Don't own a Wii, never played that game. I have played Just Dance at a friend's house, but was fine with that.

    The "Cha Cha Slide"
Never done it before. I think it's some sort of dance, and I'm fine with dancing. It's not my cup of tea, but I don't experience difficulty.

So, I only experience difficulty with one of these, and that's hand games.

I love board games, and once I have got the gist of a board game, I can get right into it. I love Monopoly, but the only part I struggled with was the money. It seemed to involve a lot of maths. Well, even if it doesn't seem like a lot, it is to me because I suck at maths, to a fault.

I don't think my AS really gets in the way of many activities really. I am not very good at bowling, I always seem to come last, but is it because I don't go bowling that often? Would I be better at it if I got more practice? Or is bowling just not my thing?

I've never been good at team sports like playing Rounders at school. I just never really got the point of the game. But it might also be from shyness and social phobia, because I used to feel quite uncomfortable when it was my go to bat, because I was in the spotlight and kids got nasty if you are too slow or something, and then I feared of being humiliated. Plus the rules were so complex, I didn't know if it was a ball or no ball, and some people yelled out ''ball! Run!'' and others yelled out, ''no, stay there!'' And I did not know what to do.

As a kid I was terrible at most sports except swimming and some parts of gymnastics. I liked soccer and volleyball but was terrible at them and gave them up by the time I was in Jr High. I get intensely perfectionistic about having right technique so as I got into teen years I just gave up learning things that interested me but that I couldn't be instantly good at.

The video games back then I was ok. And there were a couple I played. But today's video games it's comical to watch me play. I work with kids on the spectrum though and many of them are really good at these games, including the wii sports ones that they play although they tend to prefer other games like Minecraft or Lego movie theme games etc.

I am a good dancer and dance is a special interest of mine. I'm not the most technical dancer and for complex new steps I need to be shown all angles and both sides. Plus if I get too into perfect technique I have a tough time but if I can let that go I have natural talent for being an expressive dancer. So I can do cha cha slide but it did take me longer to learn it but once I did I am very good at it.

-I enjoy some board games, and as a kid my family would have a traditional "board game night" even before the game companies decided to ruin it by guilting families who never spend time together. But many board games are, well boring. No matter how many different versions of Monopoly there are I cannot see myself enjoying ANY of them. it's the more "wacky" type games I personally enjoy.

    -Sports? Yeah right. Rolling Eyes

    -Temple run? What's that? Smile

-I am frequently nervous or embarrassed to directly talk or interact with other people in an online game using free chat. I'm so sensitive to anything negative or nasty someone might say to me that just seeing it may cause my head to burst into flames! Embarassed Like for example in this one game I once played called HABBO I start playing to discover a couple of male players in my room. All I said was, "Oh hi" and they called me the b-word and left. I also stopped playing because there was so much nasty, gross, vulgar dialogue between other players. Yes, I am Amish. Rolling Eyes

-I am sorry to say, that while I may always love video games, I have recently lost interest in playing any of the newer console stuff. New consoles and games are too expensive, and they "retire" in only a few years or until the next thing comes along, and that's if they're actually successful.

-When it comes to my favorite "non-active activities" that I can do alone (crafting, drawing, writing, reading), I believe my AS helps me rather than gets me in the way of doing them. In fact, once I really get into them I tend to tune out everything else and it's like I'm in my own world and I almost forget everything else...

Dont know, not sure how many there is.

But any sport that require more than 1 person. cant concentrate. Its the same reason i workout at home.

I cant even go for a jog because if i just encounter another person on the freaking sidewalk, thats enough to ruin by focus. its hard enough to excercise in itself. without focus and distractions, no way.

I'm clumsy and uncoordinated with hand games.
Temple run is the type of game I can only do for a very limited time before I feel exhausted. I like more relaxing games.
I haven't actually played Wii Sports Resort but I hated Wii Sports because I hate those controls. If I wanted to play tennis and whatnot that way, I'd just sign up to a tennis club. Blech.
The Cha Cha slide looks hopeless, I'm no good with that kind of thing.

I often find it hard to read the rules of board games. I find directions hard to get from reading them, but most board games are easy when you actually play them. So I usually just read quickly and learn as we go. Board games are great fun Very Happy
