Vain Glorious | It Takes a Wellness Village - NYTimes.com

Think of it as a Googleplex for the fit-centric. Technogym, an Italian producer of cutting-edge (and chichi) exercise equipment, just opened an impressive new headquarters in the Cesena region of Italy that is more like a corporate village, housing an expansive, state-of-the-art gym, an educational center and a health-food restaurant serving only seasonal, local fare. The company hopes it will also become a tourist destination and plans on hosting a Davos-like wellness forum at the complex each year. The inaugural forum, which coincided with the grand opening last month, attracted thousands of guests, including Bill Clinton and Saudi Prince Al-Saud.

The design firm Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel and Partners built out the 37-acre site, focusing on eco-sustainability, bio-architecture and ? you guessed it ? fitness. ?The project aims to give our clients and partners the opportunity to experience a true wellness lifestyle, and for our employees to live in a workplace that inspires,? says Nerio Alessandri, Technogym?s founder and C.E.O. Features like exercise balls (in place of desk chairs) and standing-room-only conference spaces (to encourage movement) ensure Technogym employees are engaged physically on a daily basis. Visitors can immerse themselves in on-campus activities as well as the ?wellness beaches? and fitness fairs in neighboring Romagna, which is regarded as Europe?s leading ?Wellness Valley.?
