Overhaul of online gaming service puts the focus on multi-platform play.
Six years after AOL acquired games.com from Infogrames, the company has refreshed the service, offering a new multi-device experience and improved library of online games.
Games.com relaunched today with more than 5,000 free online games, a stack of mobile games and a mission to become the only destination for online gamers.
Of the 5,000 titles, 100 have been developed in HTML 5, making them suitable for running across multiple devices, and in the future there will be much more focus handheld devices.?
AOL said: "As mobile gaming traffic is expected to grow 65 per cent year-over-year through 2016, the platform has been designed with a mobile-first mentality."
The games are free to play and subsidised by advertising, and AOL plans to add the ability to charge for virtual goods at a later date.
For launch, AOL partnered with developers like Arkadium, Big Fish Games, GameHouse, Iplay, Masque Publishing, Mochi Media and Tylted.
More updates are planned, including the ability to promote mobile games by referring games to players through pages that redirect to various app stores, where AOL will collect referral fees.
John Fox, general manager, Games.com, said: ?AOL users have always been passionate about gaming and we?re excited to give them an industry-leading experience that operates fluidly across all devices.
?This is just the start. We have an exciting roadmap of new features and enhancements which will roll out over the coming months ? including additional personalisation and social features, opportunities for independent developers to work closely with us and many more games our users will love.?
