New cases of leprosy in India at alarming rate

NEW DELHI, July 30 ? New leprosy cases in India have reached an alarming stage as it accounted for a staggering 55.5 per cent of new global infections in 2010, said a news report.

Of the 228,474 leprosy cases detected worldwide in 2010, the figure for India stood at 126,800, International Leprosy Union (ILU) (India)?s president S.D. Gokhale told the Press Trust of India.?

?If the union and state governments do not take serious note of this fact and initiate effective steps to eradicate leprosy, the problem will become more acute,? he said.

60 jobs at Cumbrian defence depot ?safe?, says union

Unions at Longtown munitions depot believe that 60 of the 300 jobs at risk there are safe.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) had proposed closing the site, known as Defence Storage and Distribution Agency Longtown, in 2014, transferring its explosive-storage function to Kineton in Warwickshire.

The trade union Prospect is campaigning against closure. It believes that the box task ? checking and upgrading used ammunition boxes ? will be retained.

The union stumbled across the information in the MoD?s investment appraisal for the site.

Neil Scott, Prospect section secretary, said: ?When we digested the investment appraisal we noticed that the box task had been excluded.

?While we are delighted that at least 60 jobs will remain, we were shocked to find out this way. This is a major change to their project. They are not pulling out completely.

?The whole project has changed from closure to withdrawal of the explosive function.?

The MoD told the News & Star that the box task may stay at Longtown, even if the rest of the depot closes, but that a final decision has yet to be made.

A spokesman said: ?A study is underway to determine the most effective and value for money approach to providing the box task after March 2014, when current arrangements task expire. The Longtown head of establishment and trades unions are being kept fully informed during the study process and the report is scheduled to be available later this year.?

Meanwhile, the fight to save all 300 jobs at the depot goes on.

Defence Minister Peter Luff has the final say.

He is due to visit the site on August 14 and is expected to announce his decision in September.

Passengers, gateman heard sound from burning coach: Railway minister

Railway Minister Mukul Roy today said that some injured passengers and a gateman had heard a loud sound when the S-11 coach of Tamil Nadu Express caught fire, but refused to say at this stage whether he suspected sabotage.

"Some of the injured passengers admitted to hospitals and a gateman at one of the level crossings near Nellore station heard a loud sound when the fire occurred in the coach," Roy told PTI before leaving for the accident site at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.

Asked if he suspected any act of sabotage, Roy said, "I will not say anything at this stage."

"Nothing is being ruled out and nothing can be said without an investigation. It will be investigated if inflammable substances were in the compartment or it was caused by a short circuit," the minister said.

Roy said he had ordered an inquiry into the fire in the Tamil Nadu Express that has so far left 32 dead and several others injured.

He said that he had spoken to the Railway Board for setting up a high-power committee which would investigate the cause of the fire.

Describing the incident as "very tragic and unfortunate", the minister announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs5 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed.

He said that Rs one lakh each would also be paid to those with grievous injuries and Rs25,000 for those with minor injuries.

Roy said the Chairman, Railway Board, has been asked to reach the accident site.

He said that time has now come to take help of technology to upgrade and improve railway safety. Railways have been asked to prepare DPR for safety measures to be adopted to avoid accidents.

"We will submit the DPR to the Planning Commission and then take them to the Prime Minister after which action would be taken," he said, adding this required budgetary support from the central government.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display earlier in the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

LONDON (AP) ? The hiccups outnumbered the highlights, and for a while the U.S. racked up fouls faster than points.

The opener wasn't artistic.

However, it was enough ? easily enough.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points in his Olympic debut, Kevin Love added 14 and LeBron James had eight assists as the American men's basketball team overcame some sloppy moments with a 98-71 win Sunday over France.

"We know everybody else expects us to win by 40 points," said Carmelo Anthony. "For us, a win's a win. We expect every game to be like this one."

Seeking a second straight gold medal to match the redemptive one they captured in Beijing four years ago, the Americans expected a tough test from a French team featuring San Antonio guard Tony Parker and five other NBA players. And although the U.S. was never in real trouble ? it only led 22-21 after one quarter ? there were enough flaws (14 turnovers, 26 fouls) to keep coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff busy and this superstar-laden squad from feeling too comfortable.

"It wasn't perfect," said James, who only took six shots while setting up his teammates. "We've still got room for improvement. We had too many turnovers, too many fouls and we had a couple of defensive rebounds we could have come up with. But overall, we played a pretty good game for as close to 40 minutes as possible."

Kobe Bryant had said this team could beat the 1992 Dream Team that changed international hoops forever at the Barcelona Games. That matchup is mythical, but the London Games aren't and this U.S. team will have to play much better in upcoming games if it plans to maintain American dominance.

"We know we have to keep going for 40 minutes and play hard," said Bryant, who only played 12 minutes.

Afterward, Parker, who nearly missed these games after undergoing surgery for a freak eye injury, didn't want to concede anything to the Americans. But when asked if the U.S. team can be beat, he took a contemplative pause before responding.

"They're going to be very, very tough to beat," Parker said.

At times, the Americans' offense was erratic. The U.S missed its first six 3-pointers and settled too quickly for jump shots instead of driving to the basket. But France wasn't able to capitalize as the U.S. turned up its pressure on defense and forced 18 turnovers.

With first lady Michelle Obama on hand to cheer on the U.S., Durant, Anthony and Tyson Chandler added nine rebounds apiece for the Americans, who will next play Tuesday against Tunisia, beaten 60-56 by Nigeria in the tournament opener.

As they left the floor, the U.S. players stopped to hug Mrs. Obama, who can report back to her commander in chief husband that his favorite team has taken its first step toward gold.

Parker, playing with goggles to protect a surgically repaired left eye, scored 10 points but France fell to 0-5 in Olympic competition against the USA. Ali Traore scored 12 points to lead France, which got few uncontested looks from the outside and missed 20 of 22 3-pointers.

"They pressured us from the start until the end," said France coach Vincent Collet.

With the U.S. leading 52-36 at halftime, Durant opened the second half with a 3-pointer, Bryant dropped one from long range and after James dunked an alley-oop pass from Deron Williams, the Americans led 64-43.

Au revoir, France.

The U.S. team's lead ballooned to 78-51 after three quarters, allowing Krzyzewski to rest Bryant, James and Durant for most of the fourth quarter. With the game well in hand, Krzyzewski even gave 19-year-old Anthony Davis, the top pick in June's NBA draft, his first taste of Olympic play.

Durant had struggled to score during a recent exhibition tour, prompting James to give his close friend and teammate a pep talk.

"I told K.D. to be himself," James said. "We need the K.D. who scores. We don't need the K.D. who defers."

Unlike his peers, Krzyzewski has the luxury of a deep bench and he was forced to go it early and often in the first half, when the Americans got into four trouble. They were called for 18 personals and complained about some of the calls. Anthony and Russell Westbrook spent the final six minutes of the second quarter on the bench after picking up their third fouls.

"There were a lot of calls that didn't seem right," Anthony said. "One time down the floor they called it this way and one time they called it that way."

Along with the questionable calls, the Americans took some curious shots early on, and when France's Yannick Bokolo drained a 3 in the final second of the first quarter, France was within 22-21.

Nicolas Batum, who plays for Portland, thought the U.S. might "panic."

But James opened the second quarter with a 3, the U.S. quickly went on an 11-0 run and by midway through the third, Bryant and Co. restored order.

As the U.S. reserves scored on dunk after dunk in the fourth, James and Bryant lounged on the bench.

They know there will be tougher games ahead.

The first one, though, was over.

"We knew this game wasn't going to be easy," Durant said. "We know even if we don't start well we can finish."

But Kiebler was able to schedule an early return and decided to make the surprise for his son a little more special by arranging for his "two favorite forces to coexist for one special event."

Like many kids his age, Danny's favorite thing in the world is Star Wars. So Kiebler arranged for some friends to dress in costume as characters from the two film trilogies, including Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, an Imperial officer and a pair of stormtroopers.

And thus begins what Kiebler calls, "Episode VII: A Big Surprise"

While Danny is celebrating his birthday at a local Portland restaurant, the Star Wars entourage enters. The Imperial officer informs Danny that, "We have a new Jedi that wants to introduce himself to you. Would you like to meet him?"

The robed figure then enters and removes his hood, revealing himself to be Danny's father.

"I was missing him for a long time," Danny says as the pair sat down together. And when noting that his Dad wasn't supposed to be back until the end of summer, Danny declares, "That would have been too long."

Meal Planning....A New Family Perspective! - blog*spot

I used to be such an organised Mum when it came to planning and cooking meals...then i had the twins, gave up full time work?and became a stay at home Mum. Sounds like it should be the other way around doesn't it? You would think i would become more organised and have more time to plan and cook meals now that i am at home and not rushing in the door at 5.30pm! Well that's what i expected too but so far it doesn't seem to working out that way....and it's time to change that because this disorganisation is not only bugging the perfectionist list maker in me...it's costing us money we can't afford!

When i worked i used to sit down each weekend and plan out our meals with great care, recipe books strewn everywhere,?then off to the weekly shop clutching my little list for groceries, meat and veg.No deviation was accepted!?I then spent an afternoon baking for school and work lunches and often even made up some great little salads or sandwiches ready to go for the following week. I only had a teenager during those?organised days....?then i had twins and things started to slip.....well that's my excuse anyway.

It has taken me some time to get a new family rhythm going....i've never had twin babies...now toddlers to fit in around my day, i've never been a stay at home Mum before, i've never not crossed everything off my to do list each day before heading home from an office...I've never before lived in tracksuit pants and felt grateful when i get a shower in a 24 hour period....by myself that is! So it has taken a little getting used to and a now i think the time has come to realise we are a family of 5 now...not 3 and things are indeed very different...and they won't be going back to how they were before so it's up to me to set some new strategies in place!

To be fair to myself i do now make a lot of things that i used to buy before and this takes extra time....i make yoghurt and washing liquid, i try to keep a reasonable vegetable patch going and the chooks fed so that they in turn feed us with their glorious eggs and i like to embrace my old inner childcare teacher self and have fun playing and making messes with the toddler twosome.?I do still bake and i always try to have a home cooked meal on the table every night but to be honest the 'chore' of it and the monotony has been wearing me down.



From 4pm here it gets messy...there is lots of whining and leg pulling not to mention a few tantrums and squabbles....and then Miss teen arrives home from school and i need to give some undivided attention there as well (or become a taxi depending on the social calendar of the week...hers' not mine!)And then a little part of me gives up on the planned dinner and it becomes something it wasn't meant to be or we turn to takeaway which is hard on my purse and my hips. I do try to prepare what i can during the twins nap time most days but i have so much to get done during naptime that i often get a little resentful when i have to spend it cooking or prepping...i know that sounds awful...what mother resents having to feed their family? Well, that's how i am often feeling at the moment unfortunately.

I have been attempting to meal plan to try and make things easier and get back to where i used to be but it tends to be scribbled on the back of scrap paper or across the fridge whiteboard which also holds the shopping list and thus often becomes combined prompting me to wonder why i put 'porcupine balls' on the shopping list...and then i remember i was supposed to be following a plan this week!

So i have decided i need to go back to using a folder with some plastic sleeves, a meal plan and shopping list for each week. By keeping them in a folder i can also look back over the weeks to gain some inspiration?from those. What i need to do differently to how i used to plan though is think ahead to some shortcuts which recognise that the days are full and i don't have as much time to prepare and cook the way i used to....again....i know it sounds odd when i used to work all day but perhaps i was just more prepared than i remember (and we didn't need to eat by 5.30pm!). I also need to incorporate more meals that i can adapt or pull bits out of to make meals for the toddler twosome as i feel like i am making 3 different meals each night at the moment and it is leading to mini meltdowns (from me) that aren't too pretty i'm afraid!

So for now i think i need to go back to some quick, easy and wholesome meals that i can also try with 2 yr olds. I'll save some of our old spicy favourites for the weekends as a treat for the big people and stop trying to make different meals that keep everyone happy. I need to accept that for now i just don't have the time to cook some of the more labour intensive meals that i used to do (i also no longer have a nice relaxing glass of white while cooking said meal....doesn't seem to fit with my new twin mummy role anymore apparently?....) I'm going to try and use the slowcooker more as i love the feeling of putting it on in the morning and not worrying for the rest of day, i'm going to try and do a little more prep at nights (which should be easier as i shall have 'the plan' to follow!!!)instead of using precious nap times and i'm going to have some back up frozen casseroles ready in case of those just plain awful days when i haven't been able to get to the toilet by myself let alone cook anything!
I am also going to keep my fingers crossed (and probably bribe to be honest) that the toddler twosome start developing an appetite and interest in a wider range of family foods and that Ruby's sensory issues with food miraculously disappear (yeah, i know that's not going to happen....goodness it's hard to keep positive about it sometimes though.....i really hope she isn't going to just eat yellow, crunchy things into her teen years because that's going to be awkward!).

OK...i have a plan in place now and to be even more efficient i am going to download and print out one of the fab meal plan lists i have been seeing all over Pinterest rather than spending the time typing or writing up my own. Here are some of my favourites so far!

I also get lots of inspiration from Amie over at Triple T Mum? as she has twins and a toddler under 3 plus a teen and she does fabulous meal plans each week that i always read and which?have me thinking (each week....)that?i need to get myself organised with meal planning...no more excuses!!!

Next week i shall share the folder i have made up and how week 1 has gone. This weeks goal is to stick to the plan...see what works and what doesn't, try out a few different recipes instead of the same old rotation of ones i know by heart (please tell me i am not the only one that does that!!)and?also?to instigate some timesavers.
I'll let you know how i go.....time for me to embrace this new family rhythm instead of constantly fighting it and wishing for a time that is no longer relevant to our lifestyle. I have visited so many friendly blogs that have wonderful tips for meal planning each week and it is always such an inspiration...if you have any tips (or?helpful blog posts)?for me or others regarding meal planning for a family (especially with toddlers!) i would love you to leave them in the comments for us all to share.

Cut Food Waste

And yet, there are simple steps that everyone can take to stop this mountain of food being thrown away. Bring Your Own Plate
Styrofoam-filled bins are a familiar sight at most mosques during Ramadan as public Iftars tend to involve piles and piles of plastics cups, plates and cutlery. As plastic is hugely toxic to the land where it is eventually dumped, however, we need to change our reliance on it. The best way to avoid plastic is to ask people to bring their own plates and cutlery. Not only does this cut out the plastic but it also means you can have better control over your portions and can avoid overeating. Embrace FairTrade

Trade justice is an important principle in Islam and Muslims have a responsibility to ensure that they do not consume products that contribute towards injustice. If you want to keep to the Middle Eastern theme, there are some great traditional veggie dishes such as Mujadera, Tabbouleh and that?s not including a plethera of lovely hot soups, sticky sweets and yummy pastries. A nice glass of sake might not make you think of your dog. But both are the result of long domestication processes. Humans have domesticated an awful lot of organisms, from pets to grains to the fungus that breaks down starches in the production of sake, soy sauce and miso.

To learn more about microbe domestication, a research team compared the genome of Aspergillus oryzae, the fungus responsible for Japanese cuisine, with that of its wild relative Aspergillus flavus.

The wild child is a problem. It makes grains rot and can produce aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen. The destructive fungus shares 99.5 percent of its genome with its miso-making cousin. [John G. The tiny differences in the genomes suggest that selection during breeding affected genes related to the fungus' metabolism. In contrast, plant and animal domestication usually targets developmental processes: fruits get juicier, chickens grow bigger breasts, and grains lose their hard outer casings.

Man frees 17-pound lobster from Conn. restaurant

WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A Connecticut man purchased a 17-pound lobster at a Waterford restaurant, then released the crustacean back into Long Island Sound.

Don MacKenzie of Niantic tells The Day of New London (http://bit.ly/MGvGHb ) he knew the lobster, nicknamed "Lucky Larry" by local children, would have to be about 80-years-old to reach his current size and felt it deserved to live.

"It takes seven years for him to even become a lobster big enough to keep," MacKenzie said. "For a lobster to live this long and avoid lobster traps, nets, lobster pots ... he doesn't deserve a bib and butter."

MacKenzie won't say how much he paid The Dock restaurant to take Larry off the menu Tuesday.

"Let's just say that it's the most expensive lobster I never ate." MacKenzie told the newspaper.

He took the lobster back to sea Tuesday, releasing it in a secret location, where he said it would be almost impossible for fishermen to drag their nets.

"They drag during the day, so if he does venture out of this area, hopefully it will be at night," said Steve Wilson, who works with MacKenzie at a local marina and helped him set Larry free.

MacKenzie received a send-off from a group of children chanting "Let Larry Live" and the lobster was given a salute from the Niantic River Bridge operator who sounded the lift bridge's siren as the boat carrying it headed to sea.

Mackenzie kept a memento of the experience, the two thick rubber bands that had been wrapped around Larry's claws to keep him from pinching anyone.

Bieber paparazzo faces criminal charges in pursuit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A paparazzo photographer faces criminal charges in connection with a high-speed chase of Justin Bieber earlier this month, marking the first use of a new state law designed to clamp down on photographers' reckless pursuit of celebrities.

The City Attorney's office on Wednesday filed four misdemeanor charges against Paul Raef, 30, including reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, reckless driving, failure to obey a peace officer and following another vehicle too closely.

Raef could not immediately be located for comment.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 9. If convicted, he faces up to one year in county jail and $3,500 in fines.

Bieber's publicist did not respond to phone and email messages.

The charges stem from a July 6 incident in which Los Angeles Councilman Dennis Zine, a former police officer, and three other motorists called 911 to report a high speed chase along the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Prosecutors said responding officers saw a pack of six vehicles pursuing a silver Fisker Karma, a high-end sports car, which turned out to be driven by Bieber.

A Toyota SUV owned by Raef was seen traveling at speeds well over 80 miles an hour across all lanes of the freeway and on the shoulder, as well as forcing its way into lanes when it had no room to merge safely.

Authorities said motorists were forced to brake and swerve to avoid colliding with Raef's vehicle and the others.

Bieber pulled over when officers signaled him to do so, but Raef's vehicle did not stop.

Bieber was cited for speeding and released.

Prosecutors said that about 30 minutes later, Bieber called 911 and said he was again being followed by the same Toyota.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived at a downtown Los Angeles parking garage, where other paparazzi had congregated, and found the Toyota with the same license plate as the one that had chased the singer.

Officers identified Raef as the driver.

Paparazzi pursuit of celebrities has long been identified as a risk in Los Angeles.

"It's Hollywood. There are a huge number of celebrities and there's a lot of money paid for these pictures," said attorney Harland Braun, who has defended cases involving paparazzi and who said he has had to fend off photographers chasing his celebrity clients.

"Unfortunately, innocent people get caught up in these chases," he said. "I think the law is a good thing."

City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said the Raef case meets all the criteria spelled out in the law.

"We're very confident in our case," he said.

Although Bieber ended up with a speeding ticket, Mateljan said he has cooperated with authorities investigating the case.
