A few days ahead of the music industry's annual soiree in California, Moog Music has outed its latest analog offering. The North Carolina-based outfit has pulled the wraps off of the Sub Phatty: a 25 full-size key, 31 knob synthesizer that wields two variable waveshape oscillators and Moog's new Multidrive circuitry. Multidrive smashes OTA distortion with FET drive to offer a range of sounds from warm depth to growling overdrive. "We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth," said president Mike Adams. The budget-friendly price tag of $1,100 is sure to temp those who've been eyeing Moog's wares, but units won't start shipping until March. Consult the source link to part with your funds and jump past the break for a walkthrough with synth pioneer Herb Deutsch.

Influenza Sorbet Flavor, Frozen Dessert Flavors, Flu Fighting Foods

influenza-sorbet-flavors

As a huge fan of both frozen desserts and not getting the flu, I was pretty excited to hear about a new flavor from Jeni?s Splendid Ice Creams?called ?Influenza Sorbet.? A combination of Maker?s Mark bourbon, ginger, orange and lemon juices, honey and cayenne pepper, the treat does not sound particularly appealing to me in regards to its ingredients, but I can imagine that it may be quite soothing to a sore throat. Plus, it has a little dose of pectin ? found in cough drops ? which likely assists in helping people feel better during flu season.

?I?ve had people tell me it?s the only thing that makes them feel better. It actually does have a physical effect,? says owner Jeni Britton Bauer. She says that the Influenza Sorbet?s creation was inspired by a drink her grandmother used to make her when she was sick. I recall my own mother putting lots of lemon juice and honey into drinks for me as a kid when I couldn?t breathe or stop coughing due to sickness, so I would certainly be willing to try this particular dessert if offered to me. Plus, bourbon tends to help quite a few ailments ? flu-related and otherwise ? so it could just be a fun flavor, in general.

?It is really delicious,? she said to ABC News. ?The cayenne doesn?t have flavor, it just has the kick, the physical property of the heat, and then all of the other ingredients are just so perfect together. You can just imagine it as a cocktail. A whiskey sour plus ginger.?

Apparently, a whole lot of people agree: after the state of New York declared this flu season a public health emergency, Bauer says orders have increased dramatically. Of course, it?s not a cure, so I wouldn?t jump onto the bandwagon if you?re looking for medicine. But if you?re still interested in trying it,?Influenza Sorbet is available for purchase at stores in Ohio (where the company is based) and Tennessee, as well as online?for $12 a pint.

Obama seeks to enhance gun background checks

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is asking Congress to expand background checks on gun buyers to include private sales and is using his executive authority to increase the information available in data banks in the background check system. The White House calls background checks the most efficient and effective way to keep guns away from dangerous individuals.

Obama wants Congress to close loopholes that permit private gun transactions to occur without background checks. The White House says nearly 40 percent of gun sales are conducted by private individuals now exempt from checking the backgrounds of buyers.

Obama is also ordering federal agencies to make "relevant data" available to the federal background check system and to remove barriers that might prevent states from providing information, particularly mental health data, for background checks.

Union announce ballot for strike action at Halesowen College

Union announce ballot for strike action at Halesowen College

STAFF at Halesowen College are set to be balloted over strike action over four sackings in the maths department.

And a national protest to support the ?Halesowen Four? has been organised by the University and College Union and a public meeting was held last night at Old Hill Cricket Club.

Sympathisers from across the country will descend on Halesowen College for a protest on Saturday, January 26 when there is an open day for prospective students at the Whittingham Road campus.

Lead maths lecturer and union member David Muritu was sacked before Christmas and over 10,000 people have signed an online petition demanding his reinstatement and after three colleagues were sacked on Friday the UCU is demanding action.

UCU regional official, Nick Varney, said: ?As with David Muritu, the college has unfairly sacked another three members of UCU.

?Once again it has used flawed procedures to find teaching culprits for their own failures.?

He added: ?If anyone is to blame it?s the employer who failed to staff the area properly, which has led to people covering two classes at the same time and sending in non subject qualified staff to deliver lessons.

?It is difficult not to see this as an attack on trade union members, rather than anything that resembles fairness.?

Mr Muritu added: ?There will be people coming from across the country for this protest and I have been overwhelmed by all the support I have received about this issue.

?And now three more people have been treated so badly we have to stand up and fight for what is right.?

Halesowen College released a statement last week blaming poor maths results for the disciplinary action.

Principal Keith Bate said: ?The college will not condone consistent failure to deliver expected standards of performance including the need to be accountable for outcomes in accordance with established values and codes of conduct.

?Allegations of improper conduct being made against the college which appear to be associated with this situation are completely refuted.?

United confirm Chinese sponsors

Manchester United's prolific commercial team have confirmed two new sponsorship deals.

Chinese soft drinks manufacturer Wahaha and one of China's most prominent banking groups, China Construction Bank, have signed three-year tie ups with the Old Trafford outfit. Both deals are 'territory specific' and aim to take advantage of United's huge popularity in the country.

"Manchester United has a long association with China, visiting 11 times to play friendly matches," said United commercial director Richard Arnold.

"The first time was in 1975 and the most recent visit in August last year.

"Sir Alex and his team were overwhelmed with the welcome they received from fans who packed the stadium in Shanghai."

United posted record commercial income of ?117.6million last year and have already announced an eye-boggling ?357million seven-year shirt sponsorship deal with US car manufacturer Chevrolet that starts in 2014.

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's top court ordered the arrest of the prime minister in a corruption case Tuesday, the latest clash between the government and a judiciary that has repeatedly pressured the country's political leaders.

The ruling is sure to inflame the already antagonistic relationship between the court and the government, pushing the country toward yet another political crisis. It also could provide ammunition to Tahir-ul-Qadri, a firebrand Muslim cleric who was leading tens of thousands of people in a second day of rallies in Islamabad to press for the removal of the government, which he criticized as corrupt and indifferent to the common man.

The Supreme Court order against Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was related to a case involving private power stations set up to provide electricity to energy-starved Pakistan. The judges are investigating allegations that the bidding process was marred by corruption.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ordered the arrest of 16 people involved in the case, including Ashraf, who previously served as minister for water and power, said the written court order.

An adviser to the prime minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said any attempt to arrest the prime minister would be unconstitutional since he enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

"We consider it a judicial coup, and it is part of a greater plan to derail democracy," Chaudhry said.

The Supreme Court clashed repeatedly with the government over the last year, especially over an old corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari in Swiss courts. Pakistan's top court convicted Ashraf's predecessor, Yousuf Raza Gilani, of contempt of court for refusing to reopen the case and ousted him from office.

The judges pressured Ashraf as well, and the government finally agreed to the court's demand to ask the Swiss to pursue the case ? which Swiss authorities have said privately they have no intention of doing because Zardari enjoys immunity while in office.

It was unclear whether there was any connection between the Supreme Court's order and Qadri's rally. But some speculated it was a scripted one-two blow by the chief justice and the cleric to strike at their opponents in the government.

Qadri has seized on alleged corruption by Pakistani politicians to rally support for his protest against the government. The cleric rocketed to national prominence after his return from Canada late last year, and his message has galvanized many Pakistanis who say the government has brought them only misery.

But critics fear that Qadri and his demands for election reforms may derail the country's upcoming democratic elections, possibly at the behest of the country's powerful military ? allegations denied by the cleric.

Those concerns could intensify following a fiery speech he delivered to protesters Tuesday in which he condemned the country's politicians as corrupt thieves and lavished praise on both the Supreme Court and the military, which has a history of toppling civilian governments in coups.

He said there are only two institutions in Pakistan that "are functioning and performing their duties to fulfill the needs of the people."

"One is the judiciary of Pakistan, and one is the armed forces of Pakistan, and nothing else," said Qadri.

The 61-year-old cleric spoke from inside a bulletproof vehicle parked several hundred meters (yards) from parliament, facing hundreds of police in riot gear who formed a human barrier against at least 30,000 demonstrators packed into the main avenue running through Islamabad. Many waved green and white Pakistani flags and cheered as Qadri spoke.

The determination of the marchers and organizers has thrust them into direct confrontation with the government, which has strongly opposed the rally.

The protest has been largely peaceful ever since demonstrators set off from Lahore on Sunday, but the underlying tension was evident early Tuesday morning when police and protesters clashed hours after Qadri arrived in Islamabad and addressed his supporters. Demonstrators threw rocks at a vehicle, while others held up bullet casings and an empty tear gas canister.

Qadri called on his supporters to stay in the streets until the national and provincial governments were dissolved, saying lawmakers were focused on lining their own pockets rather than addressing the problems of common citizens.

"The lawmakers are the law breakers," said Qadri.

Many supporters have pledged to remain in Islamabad for as long as Qadri demands. They brought blankets to ward off the cold, and many slept in the street Monday night.

Qadri maintained that his movement was not anti-democratic, but he criticized the current political system as broken. Many of his recommendations to fix it, such as rooting out corruption and incompetence, seem more aspirational than grounded in specific details. He has issued numerous vague demands, such as vetting political candidates to make sure they're honest and restructuring the system so that the common people have more opportunity to take part in politics.

His anti-government barbs have hit home with many Pakistanis. Five years after Pakistan's return to democracy from military rule, many are furious at the power outages, terror attacks and unemployment that continue to plague them.

"This system has rotted. It has to change," said 29-year-old Iftikhar Ahmad, who traveled to Islamabad from the central city of Sargodha. "I am going to stay here ... even if I die."

Many protesters like Saqib Sultan, from the eastern city of Lahore, brought their families and slept on the road.

"My wife is here with me, my children are here, and I am here," he said. Like many others, he vowed to stay until their demands are met and called this "the last chance to save Pakistan."

One city official put the number of protesters at roughly 30,000. He did not want to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Some of Qadri's reform proposals have sparked concern that the cleric is being used as a front for the Pakistani military to derail the upcoming vote, just as the country prepares for its first transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

Qadri has called for a military role in picking the caretaker government that will take over temporarily ahead of elections, and has said it could stay in place longer than normal to enact necessary reforms.

Qadri's apparent rise to a national political force in a matter of weeks since his return from Canada have also raised questions about whether he's been getting outside funding.

The government has painted Qadri as a menace to the country's fragile democracy. Chaudhry, the prime minister's adviser, said Qadri's demands are a revolt against the state.

"Thirty thousand people cannot be allowed to take hostage 180 million people," he said.

Blog Design: How To Customize Your Blog In Just Minutes | Andrea ...

If you are looking to make money online, hopefully by now you have bought your domain name, set up your hosting account and installed WordPress! If not, here?s a quick tutorial on how to start making money with a blog. Today I want to share with you how I made the this blog look so nice, clean and user friendly and how you can customize your blog design too!

Free Vs. Premium Theme For Your Blog

There are thousands upon thousands of WordPress Themes you can use to customize your blog. When you look at this blog you probably thought, GEESH, if only I could create a blog like that! Well to be honest, I?ve been through 3 different blog designs in as many years and to get the current look I have now, I paid $70 for my WordPress Theme. But it?s not just the theme that brings a blog to life and highlights your brand but the dozens of awesome features you can use to personalize it yourself. The biggest benefit to investing in a premium WordPress theme is that you don?t have to fork over thousands of dollars and a ton of time to get the same results as a top-notch professional blog!

So where did I get my WordPress Theme? I use a company called Woothemes!

So whether you decide to invest a little more in a premium theme or go with free theme, uploading it is simple, once you?ve found there perfect design. To get your theme installed follow these quick steps:

1. Login to your WordPress Admin and click Appearance
2. Click Themes and then at the top of the page click ?Install Themes?
3. Click upload and then search for your theme zip file and then click install now

WordPress Settings

We?ve all heard the phrase ? ?Beauty is skin deep?. Well the same applies to your blog. What good is it to have a gorgeous looking blog that no one really gets to know. One major thing I see a lot of new blogger?s do is not make their website search engine friendly.

Quite frankly, when you understand WHY things rank the way they do, dominating the search engines is as easy as 1,2,3?it?s the little things that sometimes make all the difference.

Organic, keyword driven content is the easiest source of traffic. The very first thing you should do when optimizing your WordPress blog is to look at your first blog post URL. By default your blog URL will look something like this ypurdomain.com/?p=1 when you really want it to say yourdomain.com/how-to-build-a-killer-blog.

To increase you SEO ranks and your traffic, you want your URLs, blog post titles, taglines and headlines to be what you expect people to be searching for in Google, not just something that sounds cool. While catchy headlines and titles are great you want a combination of targeted keywords inserted in there as well.

So the question is?

How do you make your links search engine friendly?

To make your links search engine friendly follow these simple steps:

1. Go to your WordPress Admin and click Settings
2. Click Permalinks on the left side.
3. Change the settings to Custom Structure and use the code /%postname%/ ? This will now make your blog post link?s SEO friendly.

For more on updating your WordPress settings check out this detailed blog training:

http://andreabolder.com/2012/making-money-blogging-updating-your-wordpress-settings/

Another important place to maximize your search engine traffic is to optimize the title and description for every page and post you publish. There are a number of different tools you can use, but I personally use a FREE plugin called All in One SEO Pack to do this.

Another quick tip is to edit the details in the General settings section of your WordPress blog.

It is really important to choose the right page title, if you look at the this blog you will see that my title is filled with target keywords which tells readers exactly what my site is about: Online Marketing Training, Resources and Mentoring, Make Money Online, etc?

My page title has a list of my most important keyword phrases and you should do the same. If you are creating a weight loss focused blog, this is how you should create your tagline and headline on your website.

Weight Loss Blog| weight loss | lose weight fast | your specialty weight loss blog |
better weight loss methods | shrink bellyfat

This would cause Google to ?find? me faster and my keywords will dominate FAST!

Building Your List

More Traffic, leads, readers and subscribers, all equal more money for you. There is only one thing more important than driving traffic to your site?Getting traffic to stay on your site. One of the most effective ways to hook readers is trough your RSS Feed. Now remember you must have useful content that people actually want to read to keep them coming back so always lead with solution based value.

So what is a RSS feed?

It is basically a way for regular reader to receive reminders or alerts when you publish a new blog post. I use Feedburner to manage all my blog feed updates. It?s free to sign up and all you need to do is create a code and update your RSS link to the feedburner one. Feedburner also has an email update script that you can use.

1. Log in to Feedburner.com
2. click Publicize and then Email Subscriptions on teh left had sidebar
3. They will generate a code and then you can add it as a widget on your blog.
4. To edit your RSS widget login to your WordPress Admin and click Appearance
5. Go to Widgets, then click on RSS under available widget
6. Paste your email code in and then save the changes.

Your readers will now be able to subscribe for updates, when you add a new post and they will get an email or RSS message alerting them to check your blog out.

Ask any online marketer what their biggest regret was when they first go started. 95% of them will tell you they wish they would have started building their list sooner. Building a list is the most important asset in your business. Creating a list is powerful, creates momentum and it makes you money. Just imagine if you could drive 1000 people a day to your site and get 10% of them to subscribe to your email list or newsletter. This allows you to promote your brand, services and money making products for as long as they are on your list.

An email list s a great way to leverage your marketing efforts by promoting products to multiple people at once. What I do is create an auto responder series which automatically sends my subscribers an email every day that gives them tips, strategy and motivation that encourages them to build successful businesses online with less work. Then every once in a while I will promote a product or two that I think will help them make more money online. Don?t be scared to promote products to your email list from day one, after all you are in business to make money. You are a salesperson and if you want to eat, you need to make sales. If people opt out ? SO WHAT ? you only want people who are willing to spend money on your list anyways. Otherwise they are just taking up space and costing you money.

I have built my lists into the thousands and I always encourage people to ?give away? something of value ? something that helps your readers solve a problem. That is how you get opt-ins. Give people what they want. Think about what problems your target audience is facing. How can you help them. In the online marketing world the #1 solution people are looking for is how to drive more traffic and generate more lead via automated systems. So if you look at my opt in offer you?ll notice I am giving away a free report called Blog Traffic Bootcamp. You have to know your target market.

Your email list is like an ATM and if you focus on providing quality content and products, making money online is as easy as sending an email and watching hundreds, even thousands of dollars in commissions flood your accounts. For those of you who will be using your blog to earn money I recommend you look at getting yourself an auto responder to do this. I personally recommend Aweber which is an awesome service! If this is something that interests you, then set up your Aweber today and I will show you in the following emails how I make thousands of dollars from my mailing list.

To our success,

If any of this has gone straight over your head, then feel free to ask me a question in the comments sections and I?ll make sure you get your answers!

NRA says Congress will not pass weapons ban

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The powerful gun lobby is gauging enough support in Congress to block a law that would ban assault weapons, despite promises from the White House and senior lawmakers to make such a measure a reality.

Senators plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of ammunition magazines, like the one used in the December shooting massacre that killed 27 people, most of them children, in Newtown, Conn. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has promised to push for a renewal of expired legislation.

The National Rifle Association has so far prevented passage of another assault weapons ban like the one that expired in 2004. But some lawmakers say the Newtown tragedy has transformed the country, and Americans are ready for stricter gun laws. President Barack Obama has made gun control a top priority. And on Tuesday Vice President Joe Biden is expected to give Obama a comprehensive package of recommendations for curbing gun violence.

Still, the NRA has faith that Congress would prevent a new weapons ban.

"When a president takes all the power of his office, if he's willing to expend political capital, you don't want to make predictions. You don't want to bet your house on the outcome. But I would say that the likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this Congress," NRA president David Keene told CNN's "State of the Union."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., responded with a flat out "no" when asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" whether Congress would pass a ban on assault weapons.

Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a lifelong member of the NRA has said everything should be on the table to prevent another tragedy like Newtown. But he assured gun owners he would fight for gun rights at the same time. "I would tell all of my friends in NRA, I will work extremely hard and I will guarantee you there will not be an encroachment on your Second Amendment rights," Manchin said on ABC's "This Week."

The NRA's deep pockets help bolster allies and punish lawmakers who buck them. The group spent at least $24 million in the 2012 elections ? $16.8 million through its political action committee and nearly $7.5 million through its affiliated Institute for Legislative Action. Separately, the NRA spent some $4.4 million through July 1 to lobby Congress. Keene insists the group represents its members and not just the gun manufacturers, though he said the NRA would like industry to contribute more money to the association.

"We know what works and what doesn't work. And we're not willing to compromise on people's rights when there is no evidence that doing so is going to accomplish the purpose," Keene said.

The NRA, instead, is pushing for measures that would keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, until a person gets better. "If they are cured, there ought to be a way out of it," Keene said.

Currently, a person is banned from buying a gun from a licensed dealer if the person is a fugitive, a felon, convicted of substance abuse, convicted of domestic violence, living in the U.S. illegally or someone who "has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution."

States, however, are inconsistent in providing information about mentally ill residents to the federal government for background checks. And, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said some 40 percent of gun sales happen with no background checks, such as at gun shows and by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads.

Second bus passenger rape in India

By Ashok Sharma

Police said Sunday they have arrested six suspects in another gang rape of a bus passenger in India, four weeks after a brutal attack on a student on a moving bus in the capital outraged Indians and led to calls for tougher rape laws.

Police officer Raj Jeet Singh said a 29-year-old woman was the only passenger on a bus as she was travelling to her village in northern Punjab state on Friday night. The driver refused to stop at her village despite her repeated pleas and drove her to a desolate location, he said.

There, the driver and the conductor took her to a building where they were joined by five friends and took turns raping her throughout the night, Singh said.

The driver dropped the woman off at her village early Saturday, he said.

Singh said police arrested six suspects on Saturday and were searching for another.

Gurmej Singh, deputy superintendent of police, said all six admitted involvement in the rape. He said the victim was recovering at home.

Also on Saturday, police arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly raping and killing a nine-year-old girl two weeks ago in Ahmednagar district in western India, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Her decomposed body was found Friday.

Police officer Sunita Thakare said the suspect committed the crime seven months after his release from prison after serving nine years for raping and murdering a girl in 2003, PTI reported Sunday.

The deadly rape of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus in December led to the woman's death and set off an impassioned debate about what India needs to do to prevent such tragedies. Protesters and politicians have called for tougher rape laws, police reforms and a transformation in the way the country treats women.

"It's a very deep malaise. This aspect of gender justice hasn't been dealt with in our nation-building task," Seema Mustafa, a writer on social issues who heads the Center for Policy Analysis think tank, said Sunday.

"Police haven't dealt with the issue severely in the past. The message that goes out is that the punishment doesn't match the crime. Criminals think they can get away it," she said.

In her first published comments, the mother of the deceased student in the New Delhi attack said Sunday that all six suspects in that case, including one believed to be a juvenile, deserve to die.

She was quoted by The Times of India newspaper as saying that her daughter, who died from massive internal injuries two weeks after the attack, told her that the youngest suspect had participated in the most brutal aspects of the rape.

Five men have been charged with the physiotherapy student's rape and murder and face a possible death penalty if convicted. The sixth suspect, who says he is 17 years old, is likely to be tried in a juvenile court if medical tests confirm he is a minor. His maximum sentence would be three years in a reform facility.

"Now the only thing that will satisfy us is to see them punished. For what they did to her, they deserve to die," the newspaper quoted the mother as saying.

Some activists have demanded a change in Indian laws so that juveniles committing heinous crimes can face the death penalty.

The names of the victim of the December 16 attack and her family have not been released.

Obama, Karzai agree to speed up Afghan military transition

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed on Friday to speed up the handover of combat operations in Afghanistan to Afghan forces this year, underscoring Obama's determination to move decisively to wind down the long, unpopular war.

Signaling a narrowing of differences, Karzai appeared to give ground in White House talks on US demands for immunity from prosecution for any US troops who stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014, a concession that could allow Obama to keep at least a small residual force there.

Both leaders also threw their support behind tentative Afghan reconciliation efforts with Taliban insurgents. They each voiced support for the establishment of a Taliban political office in the Gulf state of Qatar in hopes of bringing insurgents to inter-Afghan talks.

Karzai's visit, which follows a year of growing strains in US-Afghan ties, comes amid stepped-up deliberations in Washington over the size and scope of the US military role in Afghanistan once the Nato-led combat mission concludes at the end of next year.

The Obama administration has been considering a residual force of between 3,000 and 9,000 troops in Afghanistan to conduct counterterrorism operations while providing training and assistance for Afghan forces.

But a top Obama aide said this week that the administration does not rule out a complete withdrawal after 2014, a move that some experts say would be disastrous for the still-fragile Afghan government and its fledgling security apparatus.

Saying that Afghan forces were being trained and were "stepping up" faster than expected, Obama said Afghan troops would take over the lead in combat missions across the country this spring, rather than waiting until the summer, as was originally planned.

"Starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission: training, advising, assisting Afghan forces," Obama said. "It will be a historic moment and another step toward full Afghan sovereignty."

There are some 66,000 US troops currently in Afghanistan. Nato allies have also been steadily reducing their troop numbers there with the aim of ending the foreign combat role in 2014, despite doubts about the ability of Afghan forces to shoulder full responsibility for security.

Obama said final decisions on this year's troop reductions and the post-2014 US military role were still months away, but his comments raised the prospects of an accelerated withdrawal timetable as the security transition proceeds.

Precisely how much of an acceleration was unclear. For his part, Karzai voiced satisfaction over Obama's agreement to turn over control of detention centers to Afghan authorities, a source of dispute between their countries.

The two leaders, who have had a tense relationship in the past, stood side by side in the White House East Room, nodding occasionally as the other spoke.

Obama once called Afghanistan a "war of necessity," but he is heading into a second term looking for an orderly way out of the conflict, which was sparked by the September 11, 2001 attacks by al Qaeda on the United States.

Talk of GOP primaries follows 'fiscal cliff' vote

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Republicans in Congress who took the politically risky step of voting this week to raise taxes now find themselves trying to fend off potential primary challenges next year from angry conservatives.

These lawmakers wasted little time in attempting to deliver an explanation that would be acceptable to the tea party and the GOP's right flank, and, perhaps, insulate themselves from a re-election battle against a fellow Republican. They've started defending the vote as one that preserves tax cuts for most Americans, while promising to fight for spending cuts in upcoming legislative debates over raising the nation's borrowing limit.

"In the end, he ensured that over 99 percent of Kentuckians will not pay higher income taxes," Mitch McConnell's campaign wrote in an email message to Kentucky voters the day after the Senate Republican leader supported the measure.

It was the first time in two decades that a significant number of Republicans voted for a tax increase; 33 Senate Republicans did so and 85 House members who broke with their GOP majority to support the bill that avoided the nation going over the so-called fiscal cliff but that also raises taxes on upper incomes.

"The ones that voted for it, I think they will rue the day," Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby proclaimed after opposing the bill. And Amy Kremer, chairman of the Tea Party Express, put it this way: "It's not too early to be looking at 2014. I think there are going to be a lot of primary challenges. People are fed up."

Most if not all of these Republicans who voted to raise taxes are likely mindful of their party's recent history of nasty primary battles that have pitted incumbents against tea party-backed insurgents. And none of them is likely to be immune to the scrutiny ? rising stars, powerful committee chairmen and Republicans in reliably Republican seats ? expected to confront them when they return to their districts to stand for re-election in November 2014.

The vote was a dilemma for Republicans, who have pledged for decades not to raise taxes, but faced being blamed with raising taxes on all Americans, had Congress and the White House not reached a deal on legislative to avert the scheduled increases on most Americans. The party got some cover from Grover Norquist, a leading anti-tax figure who described the bill, which preserved a series of tax cuts for most incomes, as "clearly a tax cut."

Even so, the tea party wasn't on board. Neither were many of the party's most conservative lawmakers in Washington.

"It's a really tough vote. And it's a really tough vote to explain to Republicans," Michigan Republican consultant Stu Sandler said.

Lawmakers who could be vulnerable to a challenge include Michigan Rep. Dan Benishek and South Dakota Rep. Kristi Noem, who bucked her tea party base and backed the bill, calling it "damage control."

"This makes her vulnerable and there will be discussion that she should have a primary challenge," former South Dakota Republican chairman Joel Rosenthal said. "Whether it materializes depends on votes down the road."

Some Democrats who opposed the deal also might be called to account by their own liberal bases for voting for spurning President Barack Obama and refusing to go along with his election-year pledge to raise taxes on America's top earners.

Among those who voted "nay," were liberals like Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin. He sharply criticized the bill as overly generous to wealthy Americans, and had supported Obama's original proposal to raise taxes on people earning at least $250,000 a year.

Harkin has not ruled out seeking a sixth term in 2014. And while his vote would likely prevent a primary challenge, it could be tricky for him in a general election.

Republicans ? and specifically in the House, where tea party fervor is strong ? seem more vulnerable.

While House Republican delegations, such as New York's and Pennsylvania's voted for the bill, they did so likely with impunity because the GOP bases in their states aren't nearly as ideologically conservative as those in other parts of the country.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee, also voted for the measure. It won't likely be an obstacle to his re-election in his swing-voting district, but it could cause him trouble with conservative primary voters, should he run for president in 2016.

Rep. Steve Womack, in just his second term representing heavily conservative northwest Arkansas, could be forced to answer to tea party concerns over his yes vote if he seeks a third term. And he will almost certainly face questions about it should he run for U.S. Senate or governor, the subject of GOP speculation on which Womack has been silent.

Michigan Rep. Fred Upton's backing of the measure might rile up conservatives enough in his right-leaning district in the western part of the state that he could face a challenger. But his stature may be enough to prevent a serious one: he has easily fought off recent primary opponents and, as chairman of the Energy and Commerce commission, would likely have the fundraising edge.

Upton's Michigan colleague, Benishek, also voted for the bill and could have a bigger concern. He eked out re-election to a second term in November, carrying less than 50 percent of the vote in his northern district, and spurning tea party activists there could invite a threat from an opponent.

Among Senate Republicans, Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia backed the measure and may have further agitated conservatives who were already cranky with him over his participation last year in the so-called "Gang of Six," a bipartisan group that discussed fiscal plans including tax increases and changes to entitlement programs.

After the vote, Chambliss pointed quickly to the next phase of the fiscal fight as the place for redemption for what he called a flawed but necessary measure.

Chambliss and others say they will press for tying dramatically lower spending to support for raising the nation's debt limit.

"This is just the first step in a major, major fight," Chambliss' senior adviser Tom Perdue said.

The swift defense from those who backed the increases is a response to GOP primary challenges from conservatives last year that proved costly to Republican members seen as dealmakers. Six-term Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar lost his primary to tea party favorite Richard Mourdock, and House Republicans Jeanne Schmidt of Ohio and John Sullivan of Oklahoma lost in primaries last year, attacked in part for voting to raise the debt ceiling.

Book Review
Title: "The 25 Habits of Highly Successful Investors: How to Invest for Profit in Today's Changing Markets"
Author: Peter Sander
Publisher: Adams Media, 2013; 256 pages; $10.85

Around New Year's Day, much attention is paid to breaking bad habits. "Stop smoking," "stop frivolous spending," "stop overeating" -- these not-to-do's are perennially at the top of Americans' New Year's resolution lists.

But creating new habits is at least equally as critical to creating a happy, successful life, especially since many new, healthy habits can help replace the instinctive impulse behavior of the bad habits we want to break.

Just as intentionally eating vegetables and preparing delicious healthy meals can help forever vanquish the habit of unconsciously reaching for chips or cupcakes, I believe intentionally building new financial habits can put the kibosh on your overspending, overdebting and other dysfunctional money management habits.

As if on cue, to power our New Year's money goals, comes Peter Sander's new book, "The 25 Habits of Highly Successful Investors: How to Invest For Profit in Today's Changing Markets."

Sander approaches investing like other skill-based activities, and argues that just as we can improve our skills at golfing or cooking, we can create investing behaviors that are smart, repeatable and ultimately help us achieve consistent, reliable, good performance without the drama and time drain many self-directed investors experience.

Sander advises that understanding good investing habits is critical for any investor who wants to take charge of and responsibility for his or her own investments; if you work with an investment adviser or money manager, Sander advises, "the [habits] can also help you ask the right questions of a professional adviser and analyze the performance of a fund manager."

Sander's 25 habits can be best understood as falling within three cycles of investor activities:

1. "Developing your investing style." Sander explains, "Your style is a foundation, applied over and over and based on your needs, risk tolerance and time, and added to by experience." Your investing style dictates the information you'll look to and analytical tools you'll use throughout your lifetime as an investor. Sanders buckets six habits into the style category, including knowing yourself, holding realistic and prudent expectations, being patient, and being willing to use investing math and market information wisely.

2. "Buying a security." "Here," Sanders elaborates, "you learn repeatable approaches for buying a stock like you're buying the whole business, basing the decision on fundamentals, intangibles and price." Sanders' 12 "buy habits" start with understanding the marketing, management and other fundamentals of each company whose stock you buy (beyond just the lagging financial indicators) and center around buying stock as though you are buying the entire business -- because in some respects, you are.

3. "Owning a security." Just as a small-business owner would be charged with all sorts of tasks to care for a business after he buys it, Sanders says investors should also form good habits around what to do with their share of a business during the time they own it. Wise stewardship of the securities you own encompasses habits ranging from knowing when to buy and sell, remaining emotionally detached, keeping up to speed on the news and developments that impact your security, and accounting to yourself for the performance of your security over time, according to Sanders.

"The 25 Habits of Highly Successful Investors" is written to be synergistic with the annual "100 Best Stocks to Buy" book Sanders also publishes, though each title can certainly be put to good use without the other. "25 Habits" reflects an unusual find, a book that even experienced investors can use to level their portfolios and their personal financial skills up, and that novices can also read and work through without it causing clinically significant boredom or going entirely over their heads.

Beyond its fundamentally sound advice on the core subject matter of financial skill, the book's power lies in the mindset shift that happens as you read it, the shift from seeing money matters as a dreaded task to check off the old annual to-do list to understanding that caring for and cultivating your personal finances can be an orderly, productive and efficient practice, like running or practicing yoga, but for your portfolio.
