Yemeni president's son purges rebellious officers

The son of Yemen's outgoing president is leading a crackdown to purge the Republican Guard, which he commands, of any rebellious officers found to be siding with anti-government protesters, a military official said Saturday.

The Republican Guard is a pillar of the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the attempts to ensure it remains loyal point to an effort to keep the regime from unraveling in the wake of a deal for Saleh to transfer power after 33 years as president.

His son, Ahmed, has had dozens of members of the powerful military force arrested so far, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The Republican Guard has helped Saleh maintain power despite 10 months of protests, intense international pressure and an assassination attempt in June that forced him to leave the country for medical treatment in neighboring Saudi Arabia.

The Guard, one of the best trained elements of Yemen's military, has not suffered a high number of defections like some other military units whose soldiers and commanders left to join the protest movement.

But with more frequent and serious acts of rebellion breaking out in other parts of the security services, the Guard's commanders are moving to prevent their ranks from doing the same.

The official said Ahmed warned at a Guard meeting over the past week against "copying" the actions of others. They are searching units, barracks, and have banned the use of cell phones inside the camp, the official said.

"We will not permit copying here. Force will be the way to deal with any protest," the official quoted Saleh's son as saying.

Some renegade units in other parts of the military have even locked their commanders out of military installations and demanded the removal of officers accused of corruption or involvement in the deadly crackdown on protesters.

In a significant concession, the defense minister ordered the removal of a longtime Saleh confident within the armed forces, Ali al-Shater, known as one of the regime's strongmen. Protests by subordinates accused al-Shater of corruption and using his connections with the president to illegally amass wealth.

Another sweep in search of rebellious soldiers took place within the ranks of the Central Security forces, led by Saleh's nephew, Yahia, according to a Central Security official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secretive nature of the security measures.

Hundreds of men in military uniform marched on Saturday through the southern city of Taiz, a center of the uprising, calling for trials of top commanders over the killings of unarmed protesters in the regime's crackdown

Labor protests have also swept Yemen since Saleh signed the power transfer deal last month. The deal, brokered by Yemen's neighbors on the Arabian Peninsula, grants him immunity from prosecution in return for stepping down.

He transferred power to his vice president and said he will leave the country and travel to the United States, though Washington has yet to say if he would be granted a visa.

The pact has failed to end street protests, however, because many still want to see Saleh stand trial.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of protesters held demonstrations in the capital city of Sanaa and in several other cities and vowed to stop Saleh from leaving the country.

Egypt: Coptic bishop warns of more church bombing threats; New Year?s festivities canceled, kidnappings on the rise

The military is on alert for New Year's attacks, but the security forces cannot be trusted to prevent them. They mysteriously withdrew one hour before the Alexandria church bombing on last New Year's Eve. "Egyptian Bishop Warns of Another Massacre in Nag Hammadi," by Mary Abdelmassih for the Assyrian International News Agency, December 29:

(AINA) -- Bishop Kyrillos, the Coptic Orthodox bishop of Nag Hammadi, received last week several threats of attacks to be carried out on churches in Nag Hammadi, either on New Year's Eve or Christmas Eve on January 6. "I do not want another Nag Hammadi Massacre to happen again," he said in an interview on the Egyptian independent TV Channel Al Tahrir. On January 6, 2010 6 Copts were killed and more than 15 injured in a drive-by shooting of worshippers as they left church after celebrating the Coptic Orthodox Christmas Eve's mass, which falls on January 6 according to the Julian Calender (AINA 1-7-2010).

Festivities for the Orthodox observance of Christmas are also affected:

The Nag Hammadi diocese will cancel all festivities for New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve, and will end the midnight service early and not after midnight as is the norm.
"I have reported to the police all the threats received and asked for protection. I told them that I am ready to ask our youth to organize committees to protect the churches," said Bishop Kyrillos. "Yesterday I sent an appeal to Field Marshall Tantawi, head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the prime minister and the interior minister, asking them to secure Nag Hammadi, which has experienced repeated acts of violence."
At the end of 2009, despite warnings by local church authorities in Nag Hammadi of possible violence during the Coptic festivities in January 2010, police had not bolstered security for Christmas.
Bishop Kyrillos believes that the reason behind these new threats is his unwavering support for the Copts of his diocese, who are plagued by an escalating series of kidnappings. The Bishop councils his parishioners not to give in to the kidnappers by paying the ransoms, but instead to report the crime to the police. "I cannot and will not stay inactive while I see the terrified Coptic families paying all what they have, and sometimes what they do not have, to get their children back."
The leader of the kidnapping gang, Ahmed Saber, who lives in Samasta village in Bahgoura, threatened to carry out a massacre in Nag Hammadi after the security forces attempted to arrest him and his gang, but were not successful.
From August 11 until December 24, eleven kidnappings took place in Nag Hammadi and neighboring Farshout and Bahgoura, part of the parish of Nag Hammadi, and this has "escalated recently to the extent that not one week passes without kidnapping, sometimes even taking place at mid-day," said Bishop Kyrillos. "Some families report the kidnapping to the police, some are returned without paying ransoms and some families pay huge sums of money for their loved ones."
Only in 4 out of the 11 cases did families recover their children without paying ransom. Some ransoms went as high as 630,000 Egyptian pounds, paid for the release of a physician and a pharmacist, while 17-year old friends Girgis and Mina Dawood, kidnapped together on December 24, were released yesterday for a smaller ransom. "Contrary to my advice, their families paid a ransom of 130,000 for both lads." He said he does not believe the kidnappers would slaughter the children as they threaten, but they do it for the high ransoms they are demanding and eventually getting.
Bishop Kyrillos is very pessimistic regarding the threats of attacks on churches. The Nag Hammadi Massacre of 2010, was one in a series of attacks on churches during the Coptic festivities. A similar incident took place in April 2009 when Muslims opened fire on worshipers as they left the prayer service on Easter Eve in the village of Higaza, Qena Governorate, resulting in the death of Amir Stephanos (36), Ayub Said (22), and the injury of Mina Samir (35).
On New Year's Eve 2011, a bomb detonated outside the Two Saints Church in Alexandria, killing 23 and injuring 96 parishioners who were attending a New Year's Eve Mass.

How To Build A Windows Home Server

Over the past few years our homes have become filled by devices which allow us to consume content. From each household having a main desktop PC for all the family many have expanded to have multiple PC's, or maybe a mix of desktops and laptops. A wide spread of consumers also have various portable devices, maybe the iPhone 4S or an android tablet such as the Asus Transformer... then there are TV streamers such as those from ACRyan (Playon! HD2) which all provide us with players that are capable of streaming content whether it be on the internet, or on our local network.

To store our media library we can use devices such as a NAS, Synology offer some great models like the DS212j we reviewed a few months back or a cloud based service such as Google Music but often these don't offer the storage, flexibility or upgrade path that we are used to with a traditional desktop PC and large hard drive.

For that reason many people, including this reviewer, have for some time used a home server for storage needs and my own OS of choice was the original Windows Home Server. I started my WHS experience a number of years ago with a pre-built box from Intel, their SS4200-E box which took a basic Intel Motherboard, added a Celeron CPU and enough space for four drives and a stick of memory and provided a simple entry into the WHS environment. That box, as good as it was, offered a learning experience for the OS which led me to build a custom box some time ago based on an AMD quad core CPU and various desktop parts. It ran well, serving my media on a daily basis, backing up all the systems in the house each night and generally sitting doing its thing with minimal input as all good servers should.

With the release of Windows Home Server 2011 my inner geek started to get a bit itchy, WHS V1 was a decent OS for my needs and for some months after the new OS was launched I was going to stay with the original. This was mainly because of the lack of Drive Extender in 2011 but as time went by and my disappointment with the removal of DE faded the inner geek took over and I decided to build a new box and try out the updated OS to see if it would meet my needs before possibly moving to it.

This experience would also be an opportunity to try out a few parts which were worth looking at, such as Intel's Xeon E3 series which are based on the same Sandy Bridge architecture as the current i3-i7 CPUs but with a low power rating, the E3-1220L as an example using at most 20w.

This article documents the process of choosing components for the new Windows Home Server 2011 box, from the low wattage Intel CPU, through the motherboard, PSU, memory and drives before looking at the setup process and how the OS looks and works in day to day use.

Democrats bet Obama-bashing in Iowa will backfire on GOP

In Iowa, the daily bombardment of criticism aimed at President Barack Obama seems to have no end.

?The United States has failed miserably to secure our border,? GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry said in Muscatine the other day.

At about the same time, fellow Republican Mitt Romney was blasting Obama for creating what he called an ?entitlement society? that is making people more government-dependent.

?We will not surrender our dreams to the failures of this president,? Romney said just days before the Jan. 3 Iowa presidential caucuses.

But if Iowa Democrats are discouraged, they hide it well. In interview after interview, they insist that the pounding from Republicans is backfiring and will motivate a Democratic base that?s been dormant for months. They said they are confident Obama will win the state in November.

?We?re getting fired up for our caucuses,? said Pat Sass, chairwoman of the Black Hawk County Democratic Party. ?I think he (Obama) will do just fine. These Republicans are going on and on, and so much of it is lies. I don?t think it?s going to be a problem at all.?

Sass said she had commitments from more than 1,000 county voters to attend the Jan. 3 Democratic caucuses, which are receiving far less attention than the Republican contest because Obama is unchallenged. Eight Republicans are vying to win the GOP caucuses the same night.

Sass said getting attendance commitments from those 1,000 hasn?t been hard. ?We?re fired up and ready to go,? she said.

Although Obama beat Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election in Iowa by 54 percent to 44 percent, his 2012 prospects remain tougher to project.

?You?ve got a lot of Democrats saying, ?I wish he would just lead and get up there and fight back,??? said Drake University political scientist Dennis Goldford. ?There?s that sort of disappointment there.?

Much depends on whom the Republicans eventually nominate, he said. Obama?s ?still in a position where he?s got to fight for it here,? Goldford said.

A University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll released Dec. 15 showed two GOP front-runners, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, holding slight leads over Obama in a state where the jobless rate just dropped from 6 percent to 5.7 percent in November.

In a sample of nearly 1,000 registered Iowa voters, Gingrich led Obama by 46 percent to 43 percent, with 11 percent undecided, while Romney led Obama 43 percent to 42 percent with 15 percent undecided.

Although Iowa offers only six Electoral College votes next year (down from seven in 2008), it?s a state that many Democratic analysts believe Obama must carry to remain in the White House.

Obama?s campaign appears to understand Iowa?s significance. While Republican candidates in the state have no more than one office each, Obama?s Organizing for America already has eight, including one in Sioux City in far western Iowa, and another in Dubuque on the state?s eastern border.

Organizing for America said it has already held more than 1,000 training and planning sessions, house parties and phone banks across the state and has made more than 250,000 phone calls to supporters.

It also has announced that the president will speak with Iowa supporters on caucus night via a live webcast that will be seen at caucus sites across the state.

?This is another opportunity for President Obama to reach out and speak directly to voters on the ground in Iowa,? said Obama?s Iowa state director, Derek Eadon.

Obama backers insist that the effort now under way will remain in operation all the way through the 2012 election.

?We?ve built a grass-roots campaign,? said Iowa Organizing for America spokesman John Kraus. ?Look at where we?ll be on Jan. 4 looking forward to next November compared to where the Republicans are going to be, which is shutting off the lights, leaving town and going to another state.?

Goldford said all the organizing will help Obama.

?Their task is to get the base enthused again and especially get the independents back,? he added.

Nationwide, turnout among Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections plummeted far more than it did among Republicans compared to 2008, Goldford noted.

?What the Obama people have to do is make the 2012 electorate a lot more like the 2008 electorate than the 2010 electorate,? he pointed out.

If raw enthusiasm is any indicator, Iowa Democrats think they?re already in a good place. While they won?t match the 240,000 or so Democrats who turned out for the 2008 caucus when Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards fought for the nomination, they think they?ll post solid numbers on Jan. 3.

In Dubuque County, Democratic chair Walt Pregler expects as many as 1,500 Democrats to turn out on caucus night. That?s nothing compared to four years ago, he said, but not bad considering how aggressively Republicans have attacked the president over the last four years.

?It has devastated him,? Pregler said of the barrage of criticism. ?But it?s going to take a lot of people on the Republican side to try to explain all the boo-boos they?ve made trying to block everything he?s wanted.?

Jennifer Herrington, chair of the Democratic Party in Page County near Iowa?s southwest corner, expects a 100-person turnout. She said the evening will be a celebration of the president?s accomplishments. ?We?re excited,? she said.

Herrington and Pregler said Obama?s cause might be helped if he visited the state shortly before the caucuses just as President Bill Clinton did in 1996, two days before that year?s caucuses.

Clinton, eager to counter all the criticism aimed his way by GOP candidates such as Bob Dole, spoke to a crowd of 15,000 at the University of Iowa and reminded them that, ?This election fundamentally is about you, and don?t you ever forget it.?

No such in-the-flesh visit from Obama is planned, which doesn?t bother Anita Martin, chair of the Marion County Democratic Party. ?People I talk to are very enthusiastic about him and realize the problems he?s been going through,? she said. ?I don?t get out and talk to that many people who are not Obama fans.?

Beyonce Fans Weigh In On Baby's Anticipated Arrival

From the birth date to the sex of the baby, fans share their thoughts with MTV News.

It's almost here, and no, we're not talking about New Year's. Here at MTV we're waiting patiently for an even bigger event: the birth of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby.

And depending on whom you ask, Queen Bey's little prince or princess might be here sooner than any of us thought. According to various media reports, Beyoncé may even be in labor right now.

Rumors that the 4 songstress, who was one of MTV's top Newsmakers of 2011, was set to give birth Wednesday (December 28) first surfaced on Media Takeout, with two nurses at New York's Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital allegedly telling the celebrity gossip site that they were informed last night that a "celebrity VIP" who had reserved half of the hospital's luxury labor and delivery floor would be arriving to give birth Wednesday.

There has been no confirmation that the rumored VIP is indeed Beyoncé, and representatives for the star did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

Fans of the "Countdown" singer and her hip-hop mogul husband are starting to get very excited about baby Jayonce. When MTV News took to the streets of New York to ask Bey's fans their thoughts on when they expect the baby to make its debut and whether it will be a boy or a girl, they had plenty to say.

Most of Bey's fans told MTV they expected the baby to be born in January, with one perhaps astute fan zeroing in on New Year's, saying, "I think Beyoncé's baby will be born sometime in January, maybe on the first."

We found only one dissenter on the chilly streets of NYC, and he seemed to have the best knowledge of past public statements from the couple, including an early-September interview with Beyoncé that announced that the baby was actually due in February. "I trust Jay Z, I think he's a good guy," the fan said. "Him and Beyoncé are a good couple, so they wouldn't lie to the public. So Beyoncé's baby is going to be born in February."

And nearly all of the fans we surveyed believe the power couple is expecting a baby girl. Perhaps they caught wind of de facto auntie Kelly Rowland's slip of the lip on a London red carpet in early November, where the former Destiny's Child singer said, "I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible. She won't be spoiled, but she will be very well looked-after."

One fan was particularly excited for a baby girl because she hoped the babe picked up Beyoncé's good genes. "Hopefully a girl," she told MTV News. "Probably because I'm a fan of Beyoncé's looks."

One thing all could agree on was that Jay and Bey's bundle of joy would jump right to the top of the celebrity baby power list. "A power baby, obviously," one fan said, while another added, "It's gonna be a pretty cool baby, that's for sure. Probably gonna run New York City by the time he's 13 or 14."

Do you think Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby will be a boy or a girl? Let us know in the comments!

LONDON (AP) ? A teenager was fatally stabbed Monday and a second man wounded in attacks on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.

The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street ? and a second wounding in the same road ? did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.

Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.

Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company, said hundreds of thousands of people had visited central London retailers, despite action by police to cordon off parts of Oxford Street and temporarily close some stores.

"These incidents are extremely rare on Oxford Street and we understand arrests have been made," she said. "The emergency services were quick to respond and have cordoned off the street as they continue with their investigations. We are working to ensure the street is open to businesses and shoppers tomorrow."

Tyrrell said shopkeepers had requested a meeting with police to discuss the incidents. "We understand both incidents involved gangs of youth who were known to each other (and) the police, and did not involve individual shoppers," she said.

London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the fatal stabbing.

Authorities said the teenage victim died before medics could administer help, while amateur video footage showed police struggling to part large crowds of shopper to allow emergency vehicles to reach the man.

Police erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations and confirmed that about ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.

Officers said a second stabbing took place close by ? on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street ? but insisted it wasn't immediately known if the two incidents were linked.

Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation before the teenager's death.

Dunne said that little more was known about the circumstances, but there were likely to be large numbers of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.

"A number of weapons have been recovered from that scene ? whether I have got the murder weapon I don't know. There's an assortment of items, but no guns," he said.

In the second attack, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the leg and is being treated in hospital for his wound.

Police said in a statement that three men had been arrested, but it was "too early to say whether this incident is linked to a fatal stabbing on Oxford Street."

On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.

Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

Satyajit Das on What Went Wrong With Finance ? naked capitalism

?The didn?t know what they were doing? line is a con because it allows for good faith on the part of the actors. They were just ignorant, incompetent, or mistaken. What it covers over is the criminality of those involved. As I wrote here yesterday, during this time we had the biggest frauds in history going on. Cons on cons on cons. Yet in this case, although it had the same effect of separating the marks from their money, and indeed magnified that effect, it was just people in over their heads, not knowing what they were doing. This is my perennial criticism of Das. He was part of a criminal enterprise. Once you look at it from this perspective, what happened becomes easy to understand and predictable. More than this, it becomes apparent why, even after the meltdown showed how destructive they are, the industry continues to defend and sell these instruments. But instead we are invited to believe the story that an industry filled with the best and most brilliant mathematicians money could buy and yet somehow they all missed, and continue to miss, the fatal flaws in these products that even simple arithmetic would reveal. It has become a fixture of our age that lies, even obvious ones, repeated often enough will be treated more seriously than the truth. So it is that we can see the victims of great crimes in their tens of millions, but no criminals, so we are told, who committed them.

France leads world as gloomiest over economy: poll (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France leads the world as the "most pessimistic" country in terms of the economic outlook, with the lowest recorded score in more than 30 years, according to a global poll published on Friday.

The "End of Year" survey by Gallup International of 51 countries found that France beat second placed Ireland and third placed Austria for the dubious recognition as most pessimistic, economically-speaking.

Its score of negative 79, a drop of 20 points from last year, was the lowest the poll has recorded since 1978.

"Even in 1978, after the second oil crisis that called into question an entire economic system, the French have never shown themselves as pessimistic as today," said the poll.

"Europe leads in despair, followed by North America," it said. "The rest of the world, lead by Africa, remains mostly optimistic."

With an April presidential election on the horizon and a euro zone crisis threatening havoc at home and on the continent, French voters are increasingly gloomy.

Concerns are pervasive over high unemployment, dwindling purchasing power and the fear that France's traditionally strong social support system is unraveling, even though France has mostly been spared the austerity measures taken in countries such as Greece and Spain.

"After the Second World War, there was reconstruction and our country was one of the pioneers of Europe. Today the French 'Savior State' model, praised by both Left and Right for decades, is basically considered obsolete," said the poll. "What can the French be proud of tomorrow?"

Among a list of 51 countries, Nigeria was found to be the most optimistic country, when considering economic prosperity, followed by Vietnam and Ghana.

Between 500 and 2,700 people were interviewed in each country either by phone, via the Internet or in person between October 26 and December 13.

The survey in France, conducted by BVA, took place between December 2 and 4.

Mega Man X on iOS: Rockman Hits the iPhone

Mega Man X on iOS: Rockman Hits the?iPhone

Are you the type of gamer who enjoys playing retro games, especially the ones that you loved when you were younger? WTO approves Russia's membership after marathon (Reuters)

GENEVA/MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia won admission to the World Trade Organisation on Friday after 18 years of negotiations, finally gaining full integration into the global economy two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Russia's $1.9 trillion economy was the largest outside the WTO, and accession will help reduce the dependence on energy exports that left it badly exposed to the oil price collapse of 2008.

Accession by Russia, with the second-largest nuclear arsenal after that of the United States, into a rules-based club should limit the danger of any repeat of regional conflicts like its 2008 war with Georgia.

Trade conflicts have repeatedly exacerbated tensions between Moscow and the South Caucasus state and the WTO could offer a forum to address disputes before they escalate.

"This result of long and complex talks is good both for Russia and for our future partners," President Dmitry Medvedev said in a message to a WTO ministerial meeting in Geneva that formally approved Russia's membership.

Russia now has six months to ratify its membership and could become the WTO's 154th member 30 days later. Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, who led entry talks, said it expected to do so after a presidential election next March.

"The latest will be May," he told reporters on the sidelines of the WTO's ministerial conference in Geneva, shortly after the WTO approved Russian accession. "We need some time and we would like that process to be supported by the people."

Even by the standards of trade talks, Russia's negotiations have been tortuous, suffering a series of reverses during the 12-year rule of Vladimir Putin, now prime minister and planning a return to the presidency, which he held from 2000-08.

Negotiations were close to a result in 2009 when Putin, frustrated at additional demands from existing members, launched a regional trade bloc with ex-Soviet republics Kazakhstan and Belarus that torpedoed the accession process.

Talks resumed in earnest only in late 2010 and achieved a critical breakthrough in October when Russia finalized terms with the United States and the European Union.

Agreement on a Swiss-brokered border monitoring deal for two Georgian regions that broke away after a brief Russian-Georgian war in August 2008 cleared the final stumbling block to a deal.

"I just happen to know a few things about marathons -- the last mile is the worst, the toughest," WTO head Pascal Lamy said at a two-hour ceremony. "The best moment in a marathon is where you cross the finishing line."

INVESTMENT BENEFITS

China's entry into the WTO a decade ago unleashed a decade of export-led growth but, with the global economic outlook darkening, Russia is unlikely to enjoy the same sort of uplift, experts say.

Oil, gas and metals account for four-fifths of Russia's exports and, while bulging trade and current account surpluses have helped Moscow pay down debts and accumulate the world's third-largest foreign reserves, they have also buoyed the ruble and made it hard for new industries to compete on world markets.

Growth could nonetheless benefit by 3.7 percent over the medium term and by 11 percent in the long run, according to a study for the World Bank by economist James Tarr, with consumers and service industries likely to be the biggest winners.

The real gains will come in the form of a more secure environment for foreign investors, who have long complained of corruption, insecure property rights and weak rule of law, while fast-growing Russian firms could expand more easily abroad.

WTO accession can also provide an anchor for economic reforms, opposed by entrenched domestic business interests, that are needed to wean the economy off its dependence on natural resources and promote investment-led growth.

Putin, with an eye to the concerns of powerful industrial oligarchs, has avoided publicly promoting the benefits of membership and, although ratification is assured, he still faces objections from a newly-invigorated opposition at home.

He has a tough path to the presidential election next March after the majority of his ruling United Russia party was slashed in a December 4 parliamentary election, and the opposition protested against alleged fraud in the vote.

"We have warned for the past five years of the risks of such an unacceptable step as joining the World Trade Organization," said Vladimir Kashin, deputy leader of the opposition Communist party, which doubled its share of the vote to 20 percent.

The Communists argue that lowering trade barriers will hurt Russia's agricultural sector and make it tough for manufacturers to compete -- a claim rejected by Russian officials in Geneva.

Shuvalov said consumers would win thanks to "more serious competition, better quality goods and lower prices."

The deal buys time for Russia's fast growing auto sector, giving manufacturers seven years to prepare for a reduction of import tariffs in a country that is poised to become Europe's largest car market.

Industries such as steel would benefit from recourse to WTO anti-dumping procedures. Economy Minister Elvira Nabiullina estimated that Russian industry could benefit by $2 billion a year from an end to discrimination against Russian exports.

CAPITOL CHALLENGE

Russia's accession represents a success for the diplomatic 'reset' with Moscow launched by U.S. President Barack Obama but, for American business to benefit, Congress will need to repeal a key measure dating back to the Cold War.

"Russia's accession is good for the United States, good for Russia, and good for the WTO," U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in Geneva.

The Jackson-Vanik amendment, a 1974 provision linking trade to emigration rights for Soviet Jews, would have to be revoked for Washington to be able to apply so-called "permanent normal trade relations" to Russia.

Failure to do so would allow Russia to deny the United States preferential access to its markets in what would amount to an own-goal for U.S. businesses such as Pepsico or Alcoa that have already invested billions of dollars in Russia.

With Washington and Moscow exchanging reproaches over the conduct of Russia's parliamentary vote, repealing Jackson-Vanik will be a challenge as Republicans, who control the House, gird for next year's U.S. presidential election.

"Russia's membership in the WTO marks an important milestone in its history, but there is hard work yet to be done on the American side," said Edward Verona, head of the U.S.-Russia Business Council, a business lobby that backs Russian WTO entry.

"If Jackson-Vanik still applies to Russia once it accedes, then U.S. companies and farmers will be at a disadvantage to their global competitors and will not have access to the preferential trade regime negotiated over the last 18 years."

Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T to ditch Exynos, sport 4G LTE?

Is a 4G LTE-capable Galaxy Note headed stateside? According to PocketNow, that could very well be the case. Rumour has it Sammy's bringing a branded variant of the 5.3-incher, purportedly the SGH-I717, to AT&T's lineup sometime in early 2012. We'd already seen the Note pass through the Commission's gates and had anticipated a U.S. debut would soon follow, but that version -- the GT7000B -- might simply be a color variant of the currently available international model. An operator tramp stamp and 700MHz / 1700MHz radios won't be the only changes reportedly on deck, as this tablet / phone in-betweener is said to pack a dual-core 1.5GHz MSM8660 -- similar to the HSPA+ 42 and LTE-friendly Qualcomm chipsets found in the Skyrocket and T-Mobile's SGS II. Bear in mind, folks, that this is all still hearsay. Until we get word of an official release, you'll just have to make do with an unlocked import.

Fla. gov. wants FAMU president suspended from job

(AP) ? Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Thursday he wants the president of Florida A&M University suspended amid multiple investigations spurred by the death of a drum major in a suspected case of hazing.

Scott, who just returned from a seven-day trip to Israel, called the chairman of the FAMU board on Thursday and asked him to suspend James Ammons immediately.

The board last week discussed suspending Ammons, but instead voted to publicly reprimand him. The board meets again Monday.

It was Scott who ordered Florida's law-enforcement agency to join an investigation into the death of Marching 100 band member Robert Champion. He died following a FAMU football game last month and hazing is suspected in his death.

State law-enforcement officials earlier this week announced they have opened a second investigation into possible criminal violations dealing with the band's finances.

In a brief statement released to the press, Scott's office said the governor decided to call for Ammons' suspension after getting briefed by his senior staff on the latest developments.

A spokeswoman for FAMU said she was unaware of the governor's statement and could not comment immediately.

There are currently two criminal investigations as well as a probe into whether FAMU officials had ignored past warnings about hazing.

This week, police also arrested three band members accused of beating a female member so severely during hazing rituals that they broke her thigh. Tallahassee police said Monday that in hazing ceremonies Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the three struck Bria Shante Hunter's legs with their fists and with a metal ruler to initiate her into the "Red Dawg Order." It's a band clique for students who come from Georgia.

Boat with illegal migrants sinks off Indonesia, 300 missing (Reuters)

JAKARTA (Reuters) ? A boat carrying illegal immigrants heading for Australia sank off the coast of east Java in Indonesia and over 300 people were missing with many feared dead, a senior emergency official said.

Only 76 people of 380 people on board had been rescued, said Sahrul Arifin, the head of emergency and logistics at the East Java Disaster Mitigation Center.

He said strong waves wrecked the wooden boat about 90 km (56 miles) out to sea late Saturday night. "Our search and rescue team have begun sweeping the water around where the accident took place but we are now sending body bags to that area," Arifin said.

He said the passengers were mainly believed to be illegal migrants from countries including Iran and Afghanistan. Many boat people from the Middle East and Asia use Indonesia as a transit point en route to Australia.

Local TV showed images of more than a dozen shocked-looking survivors huddled in a clinic in Trenggalek, a town on Java island's southern coast.

Many economic migrants from the Middle East attempt to cross the Indian Ocean in boats in search of a better life in Australia.

Australia-based refugee advocate Jack Smit told Reuters first reports indicated the boat was overloaded. He suggested it might involve a new and inexperienced people-smuggling operator trying to make money quickly, as the boat reportedly left from the same port in Java as another that sank recently.

"It all points to new operators, and also the population of the boats is changing," Smit, of Project SafeCom Inc, told Reuters. "It seems to me it's a new operator that took a risk that was too big."

Smit said there appeared to be an increasing number of Iranians taking to the boats and fewer Afghans than previously. He estimated that 2 to 5 percent of thousands of asylum-seekers taking to boats in this way each year died en route, with many deaths not reported.

Asylum-seekers often pay thousands of dollars to board the boats, whose journeys are organized by people-smuggling networks based in Indonesia using ramshackle vessels often poorly equipped for the perilous journey to Australian waters. This sinking is the latest of several such disasters in recent years.

Merkel downplays possible S&P downgrade

(AP) ? Chancellor Angela Merkel is downplaying the news that Standard & Poor's is examining the credit rating of 15 eurozone countries for a possible downgrade, saying the region is on the path out of its financial crisis.

She told reporters Tuesday that "what a rating agency does is the responsibility of the rating agency" but that leaders would plot a course to "regain confidence" when they meet later this week.

She says "I have always said this is a long process... and it will continue, but we charted the course yesterday with the French president and we will continue to stay the course."

Markets have been jittery following the news that S&P had placed 15 nations on notice for possible downgrades, including France and Germany, which both have a AAA rating.

New ADHD gene study points to defects in brain signaling pathways

ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2011) ? Pediatric researchers analyzing genetic influences in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have found alterations in specific genes involved in important brain signaling pathways. The study raises the possibility that drugs acting on those pathways might offer a new treatment option for patients with ADHD who have those gene variants -- potentially, half a million U.S. children.

"At least 10 percent of the ADHD patients in our sample have these particular genetic variants," said study leader Hakon Hakonarson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Applied Genomics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "The genes involved affect neurotransmitter systems in the brain that have been implicated in ADHD, and we now have a genetic explanation for this link that applies to a subset of children with the disorder."

The study appears online December 4 in Nature Genetics.

ADHD is a common but complex neuropsychiatric disorder, estimated to occur in as many as 7 percent of school-age children and in a smaller percentage of adults. There are different subtypes of ADHD, with symptoms such as short attention span, impulsive behavior and excessive activity. Its causes are unknown, but it tends to run in families and is thought to be influenced by many interacting genes. Drug treatment is not always effective, particularly in severe cases.

The study team did whole-genome analyses of 1,000 children with ADHD recruited at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, compared to 4,100 children without ADHD. The researchers searched for copy number variations (CNVs), which are deletions or duplications of DNA sequences. They then evaluated these initial findings in multiple independent cohorts that included nearly 2,500 cases with ADHD and 9,200 control subjects. All the study subjects were children of European ancestry.

Among those cohorts, the research team identified four genes with a significantly higher number of CNVs in children with ADHD. All the genes were members of the glutamate receptor gene family, with the strongest result in the gene GMR5. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter, a protein that transmits signals between neurons in the brain. "Members of the GMR gene family, along with genes they interact with, affect nerve transmission, the formation of neurons, and interconnections in the brain, so the fact that children with ADHD are more likely to have alterations in these genes reinforces previous evidence that the GRM pathway is important in ADHD," said Hakonarson. "Our findings get to the cause of the ADHD symptoms in a subset of children with the disease."

"ADHD is a highly heterogeneous disorder, and separating out the different subgroups of genetic mutations that these children have is very important," said co-first author Josephine Elia, M.D., a child psychiatrist at Children's Hospital and an ADHD expert. She added that thousands of genes may contribute to the risk of ADHD, but that identifying a gene family responsible for 10 percent of cases is a robust finding in a common neuropsychiatric disorder such as ADHD. Overall, according to the CDC, 5.2 million U.S. children aged 3 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Elia said the fact that their study identified gene variants involved in glutamate signaling is consistent with studies in animal models, pharmacology and brain imaging showing that these pathways are crucial in a subset of ADHD cases. She added, "This research will allow new therapies to be developed that are tailored to treating underlying causes of ADHD. This is another step toward individualizing treatment to a child's genetic profile."

Hakonarson expects this study will set the stage for further discoveries of ADHD-related genes along GMR signaling pathways. Moreover, the current research strongly suggests that selective GRM agonists could be tested in clinical trials as a potential therapy for ADHD in patients harboring particular CNVs. He added that further preclinical studies must first be done to evaluate candidate drugs.

Joseph T. Glessner, a Ph.D. trainee at the Center for Applied Genomics, is also a co-first author of the study along with Elia. Other collaborators were from numerous U.S. and European centers. Funding for the study came from an Institutional Development Award to the Center for Applied Genomics from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Funding also came from the National Institutes of Health, the Cotswold Foundation, a University of Pennsylvania National Center for Research Resources Clinical and Translational Science Awards grant, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other sources.
